    Table and Columns Width

    martincou Level 3
      Hi,

Quick question about dreamweaver tables: I have a 3 columns table (total width 700 px). The left and right columns are 1 pixel wide. The middle one is 698.

      698 + 1 + 1 = 700 ????

How come, despite the fact that I put the cell padding, space and borders at 0 (or empty, I do tried both...), Dreamweaver told me (in parenthese) that the middle column is 692… and the left and right ones are at 4?

All columns are empty and I don't use spacer ...

      I just don’t get that …

PS: Usually I use CSS to design my page, but I just would like to answer a work colleague and understand how DW think on that specific issue.

If someone can help me, thanks !

Are there non-breaking spaces in your empty cells?

            It works ! Thanks !

It only work with cell padding, space and borders at 0. But it work ...

How come Dreamweaver puts non-breaking spaces in empty cells by default ?

And why sometimes, the number in parenthese is higher than the cell width ?

Because some browsers don't display the cell correctly if the cell is
empty. It ensures consistent result across browsers.

The number in parentheses is the ACTUAL width as determined by the table
contents. The other number is the one you have applied in the code.
