Contact form - Error or spam?

This is probably obvious but I just want to make sure before I try to fix whichever ptoblem it is.
Over the weekend there were 2 form submissions from my website:
Contact name: kiahnbyr

Company name: kiahnbyr

Telephone: shTDltYUKgEOnxVtY

Fax: vzFswrsTHLpUUO

E-mail: byipbm@zqtqfn.com

and

Contact name: malcvov

Company name: malcvov

Telephone: QzuthJUorRNRCDKV

Fax: MBKbSAmzHqRYPsF

E-mail: onkfoi@obkczt.com

Both also had similar random letter links in the comments bit (<a href=" http://lfxzdrhdhjrv.com/">lfxzdrhdhjrv</a>, rnciwhwjxktb etc..)

My first thought was spam, but then I wasn't so sure because the form isn't supposed to send if the telephone and fax fields aren't all numbers.
Is it just that the bots can get round this and this is spam? Or is there likely to be an error somewhere?
I have tested the form this morning and it has worked, but I'd still like other opinions.
Thanks

Your first thought was right.

It sounds as though you're relying on JavaScript for form validation.
With JavaScript turned off (as in a bot or somebody just playing), it's
totally useless. Validation must also be done server-side.
