Well, the fact that it works on another user account means that the app itself is fine, there's a preference somewhere that has gone sour on you. Did you try rebuilding permissions on your Mac? (disk utility) A quick fix for you would be to copy or move your folder full of fonts into the "shared" folder under "Users" that way both your current account and any subsequent accounts that you have can use that resource. Faster than familiarizing yourself with the latest version of illustrator anyway.
No, It´s not necessary to unninstal CS2. Install CS4 normally if you prefer.
Have you already tried to reinstal or repair installation of CS2 along these 2 days?
Thanks, Michael-- I'll try repairing the permissions but I think I need to wait -
the trial version is downloading now (only 25% in 30 mins) so I guess it would not be wise to mess
with the disk utility at the same time. If all else fails I'll try working under the different user acct like
you suggested. Any other ideas for finding or fixing a pref gone sour?
Here's a list of places Illustrator puts preferences:
- /Users/[User]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings
- /Users/[User]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Save For Web AI 12.0 Prefs
try the plist file first, You can trash it and it will regenerate itself. The others need a bit more care when trashing. I recommend making a copy of what's there first, move the copy someplace safe and then trash the originals. If it doesn't help, replace with the copies so you don't run the risk of losing some settings.
Note, this is for CS3 but aside from the version differences, the paths should be the same.
Thanks Michael-- Found all prefs then trashed and it opens--
you are a lifesaver.
Should I buck up and buy cs4?
Glad that worked out!
Should you upgrade? Only you can answer that one. I personally like CS4 but i have to upgrade with each release since I'm an instructor as well as a graphic artist. Illy CS4 has multiple art boards, a new blob brush, transparent gradients and a few other improvements to its credit so if you think you might like to use these features, then an upgrade may be worthwhile.
Once again, thanks for your time - your help makes a real difference-
esp when adobe basically disowns you when you don't upgrade!
