    Unlink a text file

    mattlkelly Level 1

Though InDesign Help claims their is an "unlink" option in the drop down menu of the links panel, it seems at least that my version of InDesign 6.0.4 does not have that feature.  I am aware of the option in preferences to not allow text files to be linked, but this is a furnished file that has missing links for text files, which we do not want to update.

Does anyone know how to activate this rumored unlink option in version 6?

If you don't see it, perhaps you've got it turned off in your work space.

If it's enabled, repalce your preferences: Adobe InDesign CS4 * Setting preferences

Select the linked text file and go to the flyout menu and choose embed link. If you received the file and the link is missing then you will not be able to embed until you relink the missing link.

I think the "Embed Link" option is just for graphics.  If you have a linked text file, once you choose "Unlink" it embeds.  The original text documents don't seem to be needed (you can unlink even if you've deleted the original text file).

                Lisa,

You cannot choose Embed for a text file. Also there is no issue with unlinking a missing text file.

I think I must have the ToysR'Us version of CS4 Premium.  Here is my Menu Customization:

Wrong menu. Scroll up three to "Link Context Menu."

Try resetting the workspace to "Advanvced." I don't think it will help, but it's quick.

Next is to try resetting your preferences (see the link in my first post). If that doesn't work, you may need to reinstall.  A screen shot of the links panel would be helpful, menu open if possible.

The Advanced setting has no effect.

We have four copies of InDesign 6, two PC and two Mac, and all have the same Link Content Menu display.  One copy I installed just yesterday on Windows 7 and had selected the default installation, which I believe I had done with the other 3 when we first got the CS4 versions.

I have been working with InDesign since v. 1.5, but have never run into anything like this.

I think what I will do is give tech support a call tomorrow.  However, last time I was transferred a number of times before I just gave up, which may have been the objective.

                            You've installed the 6.0.4 patch?

Yes, all of the versions are 6.0.4.  Maybe unlinking has been banned in Texas.

And it makes no difference if a differnt file is open, or no file?

I have checked the Link Content Menu with files open and with no file and by selecting linked images.  I have turned of the machine, walked out of the room, re-entered the room through a different door, turned the machine back on, and still no go.

I seem to have that unlink option in my Links Panel Menu (MacOS 10.5.8)...

Well it is where you would not expect it.

Look under Preferences>File Handling - Links:

                                          Links.png

Turn this on and "Unlink" becomes available.

                                          Hope this helps.

                                            Mark,

I really don't think that's the answer. Linking of wordprocessor and spreadsheets is not enabled on my system, and I still have the option to show or hide Unlink in the panel menu, and it is visible, though grayed out, in the menu. It's remotely possible, but not very likely, that you would have to have turned it on at some point to see the option in the menus.

That is what I have to do to enable text linking. I did not have that option in the Menus Customization dialog with it turned on but it is available in the Links Panel.

Mark, the OP wasn't asking how to enable linking, he was asking how to UNLINK a file that wasn't provided.

He wanted to activate the option to UNLINK, that was what my understanding was. And this is the only way I know how to activate the option since UNLINK wasn't available.

So you are saying the linking must be active before you have the unlink option available? I don't think so.

First of all, that's a document level preference, so it should have already been set, and second, you can unset linking for a document that has missing linked files and still have unlink in the menu (see capture).

I think something else is at play, but I don't know what. It can't hurt to eanble Linking, though, if it isn't, to test.

I just tried this and it did work for me.

I linked a text file, moved its location so it had a missing link icon, enabled LINKING in Preferences and had the UNLINK drop down menu item available. Clicked Unlink, the text vanished from the Link menu and remained embedded in the text box. Worked like a charm.

I also would like the OP to try this on his doc (preferable a copy for safety). Couldn't hurt.

From all of your suggestions, I have attained a partial solution.

The InDesign file we received had a linked Word document that showed up as being modified.  If we updated the link, all of the text in the document reflowed incorrectly.  So the objective was to unlink this document and avoid the possibility of someone else working on the job would update it unknowing and cause a problem.  So we wanted to unlink it prior to it being updated.

As an experiment, I went ahead and updated the link, and then the "Unlink" option did become available in the "Links" drop down menu.

Thus, the link needs to be up to date before it can be unlinked, at least on my copies of InDesign.

However, the "Unlink" still does not show up in the Menu Customization, whether or not the link text files option is selected in Preferences.

As they would say on Myth Busters, the ability to unlink, as far my settings go, is plausible.

                                                        Thanks to everyone.

Every time I open the document (and also in the pre-flight check) it shows as a missing link. I started to Relink, but then it seemed to be replacing the new material with the old - not what I want.

It's only a little  thing but having it show up all the time is a nuisance. Has anyone worked out a solution? There is no mention of "Unlink" anywhere, and I tried MattKelly's fix but "Update links" was greyed out.

It should show as modified, not missing, if ID sees the same file, so I suspect that's why it isn't giving you the new changes, if that's what you mean.

I'm a little confused though about what you do mean. Are you saying you've edited the file in Word or in ID? What is it that you want to happen?

but when it got to about 100 pages Word was struggling so I bought ID4

and placed the Word document into it. It was then heavily edited  and

Now, whenever I open the ID4 document I get a message saying "This

so I cancelled that. I am assuming that ID4 want to make the updated

It still seems odd to me that the file is missing, rather than modified, unless the Word file was moved from it's original location, but that's not really the issue at this point. You've just discovered the problem with working with linked text, when you update it removes any changes you make in ID and replaces the current work with the updated linked text. The only good way to work with a linked Word file is to be sure that you have a good set of styles in the Word doc, and their use is strictly enforced, and that all changes get made in Word, not ID.

Since I've never had to deal with this exact situation, what I'm going to suggest may not be the most efficient method, but I think it will work.

Start by making a backup copy of the doc in it's current state. I haven't tested this, and the potential for something to go seriously wrong is pretty large.

Select each story in the document that is linked to an external source and export to InDesign Tagged Text, compact or verbose should make no difference, then delete the story, but leave the frames. Go into your prefs and turn off link to text files, and then finally place the tagged text back into the existing frames. I'm pretty sure this will get rid of the link and your text should be preserved exactly as it is.

I'm using Indesign CS6.  When I place the Word file into my ID doc, I am unable to prevent it from putting the Word in as a link.  Even if I turn off the "Create Links When Placing Text..." selection, this happens.

So okay, but I worked on the ID doc for a couple of days, and then I happeend to change the Word file, and I didn't want ID to do a "relink" as I didn't want to wipe out my in-ID edits.

ID hung and froze when I told it not to relink.  I used Task Manager to turn off ID, then opened my ID Doc and tried to Unlink the Word Doc in the Links dialog, and again the program hung and froze.

I changed the name of the Word Doc so ID wouldn't keep wanting to use it.  Then I got a warning exclamation point on each page.  Plus a hang and freeze.

And then my document refuses to open at all.  I'm having to start over. This time I'll make a copy of my Word document and label it DONT_EDIT, and place that and be sure never to open that Word doc again...

The moral seems to be either (1) you can't embed a text file at all, and it can only be added as a link or (2) maybe my text file is too BIG to be embedded.  I do recall that Dreamweaver has a size limitation for pasting Word in, and there IS a workaround, see this link:

                                                                      http://www.jdhodges.com/2009/09/dreamweaver-document-too-large-copy-past/

I wonder if there's a similar size-limitation workaround for ID?

I have a perpetual problem of not being able to unlike my text files and it is highly annoying. They still exist but have not been updated because at some point we have to ditch the word files since they never import properly anyway and updating would simply throw our layout off.

Worked with linking both enabled and disabled in the prefs, too.

You can only unlink text and spreadsheet files, so unless you select the correct file type the option will remain grayed out.

The only other thing I can think of that I've done differently is transfer this file between myself and another person: but they cannot unlink either.

I also deleted a file, as you can see and no change. It should be obvious that it does not work and this same issue has existed for at least the last two previous versions. Peruse the forums yourself—you'll see that there are no solutions.

I certainly have no explanation for why that changed.

In addition, there are definitely others with the same problem. Here are the specs.

                                                                                  • ID v8
                                                                                  • no plugins

One other potential peculiarity of my setup is that I use a template file for each issue of my magazine. And it has linked files that we replace with new links. But I don't see how that would make any difference.

Also, if it makes an difference—I can unlink some files, sometimes. I wonder if this happens when two different computers link the same file? Like I said, we transfer the file back and forth.

I do appreciate for your help, regardless.

Seeing "embed" makes me think you've selected the wrong file type again.

I can't think of a reason why moving the file from one computer to another, or using a file that was linked when on another computer would make any difference. As far as ID is concerned the link is either up-to-date, modified, or missing, and that's based entirely on the path information and timestamp in the pointer that is the link. Are these files stored on a network, maybe? A bad time synch with the server might be an issue (and would cause all the links to show as modified even if they haven't been, as I would guess is the case with most of the images).

You mentioned if I perused the forum I'd find ohter refences to this problem, but my search has turned up only this thread. Do you have some other links?
