    CS4 Project Crashing

    Nexus01 Level 1

      hi guys,

i have a project which crashes adobe premiere when ever i do ANYTHING.

its got a 10 min sequence with a few titles and cross dissolves and thats it.

i turned one clip into a nested sequence, then added a second copy of that nested squence set to play in reverse at double speed.

this is when things went wrong, i got a quick "rendering" message appear then the source preview and export preview windows went grey.

now if i do anything within the project it hangs adobe premiere... i can load the project but as as soon as i do anything it hangs it again. even just trying to create a new project while the old one is open.

if anyone can help me i'd greatly appreicate it. i've spent a lot of time on this

OS is Win7 RC1 x64 with all updates applied, english using res 1680x1050.

CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3Ghz with 4GB of RAM.

Video card is GeForce 8800GT 512mb using the latest drivers from nVidia.

            1 monitor in use.

Sound card is a RealTek HD driver v6.0.1.5874 released in june.

system is running a 36GB 10k RPM Raptor as the primary drive with 5.3GB free space. adobe is installed on this drive.

projects and videos are stored on a RAID 1 array with 1TB storage, 170GB free.

video capture device is a Twenty20 ContourHD, no drivers required or any capture software. it writes directly to its own SD card.

if it means 3rd party plugins in adobe premiere, none are installed.

i can do some stuff within the project, like clear sequences etc but for some reson the source and preview panes are grey.

if i drag a srouce clip to the source preview pane it hangs the app. if i hit play for the export preview pane i get the "rendering" message then nothing happens. if i hit the play button a second time it hangs

i tried clearing all the sequences and just playing a source clip and it still hangs....

Couple of remarkable things about your data:

              1. Why use Quicktime on a PC?

              2. What is it with the weird dimensions? 3392:1755? Why not 16:9?

              3. Why 848x480? Why not use the HD quality that this camera boasts about?

Can you replicate the problem with ordinary video material, for instance with DV material from a mini-DV camera?

What does GSpot say about the codec in use?

i dont know, it just records them in a .mov format.

im not sure why the dimensions are like that, i didnt notice! thats not what i set them to when i created the sequence....

im using the WVGA over 720p because it provides 60fps at that res. the FPS is more important than the Res for this fast motion.

this is the 4th project ive done working with these videos. the only things that i noticed that were different from the previous times are:

                1. for some reason when i did an export just to see how it look so far it took 3 hours, where the other projects took 1.5 hours do do the same work.

                2. the only other thing i did different was adding a nested clip to play in reverse at 200% speed. its just after i added that, it went wrong

The codec status undetermined, as GSpot reports, may indicate you need to install the codec that came with the camera.

yeah i spotted that, i use the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack for my codecs.

just updated both 32bit and 64bit versions to the latest making sure that h264 codecs were installed.... gspot still shows it as undetermined...

With K-Lite installed, often the only solution is to start with a clean install of OS and programs. K-Lite is a disaster and should be avoided like the plague.

Can you enlighten me on the relevancy of K-Lite in a VMware ESX/vSphere environment?

I have a Dell Poweredge T410 with dual E5520's here for VMware testing purposes but can't see the relvancy to K-Lite?

Well, wiping my system drive and starting from scratch isnt the most practical answer right now especially since i dont know it would solve any problems.

but i have a fresh Win7 x64 RTM build available in my VMWare Workstation, so what codec should i try installing to get gspot to register it?

ive already tried a couple of ffdshow installers from sourceforge for h264 and avc1. still the same thing in gspot.

FFDShow is another one to stay away from, it is a devil in disguise.

What does the camera come with, in terms of codec? Any chance of finding a converter with Google that allows you to convert to a standard AVCHD codec, like Sony, Canon and Panasonic use?

                                    Nexus01 Level 1

it doesnt come with anything, it has a piece of software for uploading the videos to their website and cropping scenes and thats it

i have made some good progress however, i just discovered that if i deleted the nested scene which i placed in reverse, then save the project, restart premiere (which has to be done by ending the process in task manager) and reload the project again i am able to continue working on it.

did some more testing now i got the prject working, the ONLY way i can re-create this is if i set a NESTED sequence to play in reverse. if i set normal "clips" to play in reverse its fine.... is this me being stupid? are you not supposed to be able to do that to nested sequences? or is this still a codec issue?

what about the adobe media converter?

added a second copy of that nested squence set to play in reverse at double speed.

If memory serves, this kind of thing has caused issues in the past.

                                        Nexus01 Level 1

discovered i didnt need to set it to double speed to cause the issue, just setting the nested sequence to reverse did it.

so is this a limitation in adobe premiere handling these perticular source files?

its a shame because this ruins one of the cool features of adobe premier
