Having "0" in front of a filled in number Generates Wrong Math

I have a calculator that works very well. But if someone puts in an amount such as 04500 instead of 4500 the math gets screwed up. Any idea why? Or better yet, how to check the number and remove the 0? I have checked the numbers for "$" and "," and it replaces them with "". This method would not work for this because it would then turn the 04500 into 45.
