TextArea htmlText and declarative styles in Flex4?

In Flex 3 I'm using style objects to style substrings of the htmlText property of a TextArea:

"This is some html text <span class='foo'>and this chunk of text gets the styles associated with class foo</span> etc etc"

Doing this in ActionScript is not as easy or as flexible as it would be if it could be done declaratively using <fx:Styles> .foo {} </fx:Styles> or semi-declaratively in combination with StyleManager. However, taking the declarative approach, I can get the foo-style to apply only to the entire contents of htmlText, not to a specific <span>.

Is the declarative option simply not available in this scenario, or am I doing something wrong? If so, an example would be greatly appreciated.
