In IDCS3 how do you print part of a page?

I use IDCS3 to create large graphics, 48"x96" and larger. I always need to print a section of a graphic to proof in color on an 8.5 x 11 color printer. This is easy, oddly enough, in the sister application Illustrator. You get a thumbnail image in the print dialog and you can pan the page area around to print exactly what you want. For no good reason, this feature seems to have been left out of IDCS3. I can't imagine that Adobe felt it was essential for AI, but not for ID so I assume that there must be a way to do it that I'm missing. Please don't ask me to tile it. First, there is no way to tell which tile is correct and second, I don't want to print the entire document on 100-plus pages. I just want to print one. I'm assuming it works like AI somehow, I just can't find it. Anyone know how to do this very fundamental thing? I know it is going to be simple, but I'm willing to risk embarressment to save paper.

      Thanks,

Not sure if this is the correct answer, but how about changing the setup to say, letter size, and then simply moving your artwork into the desire location for printing?

I have never seen a setting in ID that mimicks AI's page tool

Thanks, that sort of works. It requires screwing up my layout and document size and then undoing it all. It's not exactly elegant, but it does the job. Thanks!

It is inexcusable for Adobe to leave it out, but that's what you get with a monopoly. Adobe has no concern for their customers or their problems because they know we have no alternative.

Or, you could create a single page 8.5 x 11 InDesign file with an image frame. Then, PLACE your  oversized InDesign file. Position the linked art as needed and print (or export to PDF).

If CS3 cannot place InDesign files, then you can still do this by way of exporting a PDF of the oversized document, placing that and positioning as needed.

Michael Trout's method is probably the easiest (CS3 does support placing .indd), but yes, you should be able to do this with tiling. Use Manual tiling, not automatic, to set the tile where you want it.

Peter, using manual tiling would work except that the print dialog box in ID does not show a thumbnail of the image (like AI) and I don't think it allows you to move the tiles around the little white rectangle that it does give you (again, unlike AI.) I haven't used tiling before, do you mean that the tile manipulation occurs on the actual layout? If not, then I have to count rows and columns of tiles and then try that again on the print dialog page where the page icon is the size of a postage stamp. Remember, I'll have around 100 tiles to pick from! It sounds like it wiill work, however, and I appreciate all the help. Still, it is maddening that this sort of thing comes up again and again where one part of the "suite" has a feature that is nonexistant another.

Manual tiling in ID is measured from the ruler zero points, so you reset the rulers to have the zero point at the top left corner of the area in your tile. You can pull guides if you like to make it easy to find places you want to be corners, then drag the zero point tp snap to the guides.

As I said, placing the file inside a new doc the size of your printer page is probably easier in the long run.
