I can't fathom out why I cannot 'subtract' a path in one 'compound shape' from a path in another 'compound shape'. I'm sure it must be simple as I have managed it with other elements of the same object - I am just trying to subtract a shape on top of a lower shape so that I have a transparent background.
Any tips much appreciated. I have attached the file as I imagine there are quite a few circumstances governing what will and what won't work!
Sorry - forgot to mention - ai CS4 on Mac OS X 10.5.8

The strokes and appearance settings were causing the Pathfinder commands to fail. Objects with strokes often cause unexpected results with Pathfinder. By expanding everything, you eliminate that issue.
Thanks very much Scott. So simple yet baffling if you don't know about the strokes problem.
