1. Re: CS3 Encore Crashing Repeatedly
John T Smith Nov 14, 2009 12:28 PM (in response to pcford)This is aimed a Premiere Pro, but may help
First, work through all of the steps here http://ppro.wikia.com/wiki/Troubleshooting
If your problem isn't fixed after you follow all of the steps, report back with the DETAILS asked for in the questions at the end of that link -

pcford Nov 14, 2009 1:26 PM (in response to John T Smith)Thank you for answering my question. But with due respect, many of the questions are for Premiere....and in any case...it would take more time than I care to take to work through all of that.
I updated Encore to 3.01 and it seems to be saving the project. I will work with it some more. In the meantime I would welcome any suggestions from anyone.

Bill Hunt Nov 14, 2009 1:42 PM (in response to pcford)This ARTICLE might be useful to track down "clues," as to exactly what is happening when the program crashes. Most often, there is a trail, though some of the entries in Event Viewer can be very cryptic - to the point of uselessness. Concentrate on the ones with links and follow any/all.
Good luck,
Hunt

Bill Hunt Nov 14, 2009 1:44 PM (in response to pcford)I also find the tips in this ARTICLE useful before starting an NLE, or authoring session. They help eliminate any problems with other programs, or Processes.
Hope that something helps,

pcford Nov 14, 2009 1:49 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Thanks, Wine Snob. I updated to 3.01 and nuked a bunch of freeware programs which were related to DVDs. It seems to be working better; Encore reports no problems, so I am going to burn a DVD....I'll let you all know what happens when I am done transcoding. Thanks again.

I said "This is aimed a Premiere Pro, but may help"
Many of the ideas and problem solving steps at that link are generic enough that they have helped other people who don't even have Premiere Pro
If you don't have time to do your own troubleshooting, I have no more time for suggestions

I hope that this takes care of all of the issues. It's sometimes surprising how seemingly unrelated applications can "mess with" Encore. The same with PrPro, and that is what prompted that "Clean, Lean Editing Machine" article above.
Now, I still use Encore 2.0, but have found it to be rock-solid over all of the years. I do not recall many CS3-specific issues, when it was current, but might have missed some here.
Let us know how it goes, and someone can likely jump in with some more stuff to try, or at least look into.
Good luck,

pcford Nov 14, 2009 6:09 PM (in response to John T Smith)Frankly, over the years these troubleshooting trees have proven to be a waste of time.
The program is working again; I have finished the DVDs. Thanks for the offer of your expertise.

9. Re: CS3 Encore Crashing Repeatedly
cutmymovie Nov 14, 2009 6:10 PM (in response to pcford)While I haven't read anything in this thread, I have just gone through 2-3 days of testing out theories and stuff.
About 6 months ago or so I upgraded from encore 1.5 to cs3 because I had a project of a dv avi file transcoded in 1.5 that no matter what I did would not burn a disc or create a folder or image. I gave up and upgraded to cs3 and the project burned right away!
fast forward to this weekend. The same situation came up AGAIN! Now, I had been having continual issues any time I use automatic transcoding for standard dvds, they would come out jittery. My editing system is a high pentium 4 3.2 ghz single core processor. I recently aquired a duo core processor laptop, and so this weekend tried an auto transcode in the duo core laptop with the same jittery results. I also tried disabling hyperthreading in my single core. My project kept erroring upon trying to build. I narrowed down the issues slowly to a point I knew it was the transcoding of the motion menus within encore. I re-enabled hyperthreading and it worked, it built properly!
So bottom line is, I KNOW that disabling hyperthreading is a bad thing for CS3 (and most likely transcoding with it off). And I KNOW for some unknown reason, automatic transcoding always produces jittery video regardless of processor. I theorize now that auto puts it into a progressive rather than an interlaced mode. And it forces you that way, there is no way to change anything unless you go to manual transcoding.
But through the process this weekend, I learned that Premiere Pro 1.5's media encoder can also make an mpeg 2 file from the timeline. It actually seemed to go much faster than in Encore as well. Also, Premiere's is good because you can add markers throughout the timeline, and it will embed the info necessary (GOP's?) to later add a chapter mark in the exact frame you intended upon importing the transcoded mpeg 2 file into encore.
HOWEVER, I found out the hard way that premiere 1.5's media encoder produces a wav file for the audio track, and a .m2v file extension for the video track. If you import that as is into Encore CS3 it will fail. If you rename the extension from m2v to m2p, it will then import without erroring. (I figured this out because I also tried another program to transcode the avi file and compared file name extensions).
Hope this helps someone out! By the way, I am stuck with Premiere 1.5 right now because I am still using Canopus DV Storm which stopped supporting Premiere after 1.5 and went on to solely using their own NLE software called Edius.

pcford Nov 14, 2009 6:11 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Wine Snob...
I don't know sometimes you just struggle for a while and the problem is solved for whatever mysterious reason. This happens in life as well as 'puters.
DVD project is done; all's well that ends well. Thanks again.

That is the best news possible.
Yes, sometimes one just needs to hit the correct phase of the Moon, do the "jiggly dance" correctly and at the right time, or something else.
I've only had one error in Encore over the years. It was in a Project that was being done from a "termplate," as I had about 17 DVD's that used the same basics. Don't recall the exact numbers now, but with about 14 of these Projects completed, using the same "template" Project, on #15 I got the error. The basics were the exact same, and all of these Assets had been created, just as all of the others, in PrPro with the same specs. I could not track down why I now got an error. Finally gave up, and just started a new Project. Again, I used the "template" Project as a starter, Imported my Assets, just as before. Did my linking, and modified my "template" Menus in PS, just as before. No errors. It was perfect. So were the remaining segments of the overall Project, with the same exact workflow. Obviously, there was a mistake on my part, OE, that messed up #15 on the first try. Something was just not correct, but I never figured it out. Finished the full set of DVD's and the client loved them. That was what was important.
Glad that you got things finished. I'm sure you are like me, and would like to know what worked perfectly vs what did not, but the job got done.
Good luck,
Hunt

pcford Nov 15, 2009 12:48 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Hunt,
Yes, it seems like one has to suffer a while until you move ahead. Like Ringo sang, "Ya hafta pay your dues if you want to sing the blues."
I'll be glad to see the backside of this project. After turning in an approval copy, the client asked, "Do you think it would be too much trouble to add the sponsors?" About twenty five names and several categories. We had not done this in the two previous times we have done the DVD for them.
oh no, no trouble at all.
I think Encore is a great program; I just not fluent with it yet. I have to admit that I have used Nero until about a year ago...sometimes the simplicity of the that program looks real good to me.
Gotta watch the whole thing one last time. Once I misspelled a chapter title on an instructional video for an important international company. We were most of the way through the DVD burning at the media house.
oops.

I understand completely. When doing all, but the most simple Titles, I do the initial layout in WordPerfect (or Word), and do a spellcheck, plus match each letter with my script. Then, these are Copied/Pasted into either AI, or PS, where I create the Titles (even from AI, they go to PS for Rasterization), and are Imported into PrPro as .PSD files. Any animation is done there, or AE.
When I think that I am done with the Project, I do a DVD RW and test it on several set-top units. During this time, I watch and read again, and again. At this point, I get a sign-off from the client, even before the first copy is done, whether I will be burning, or the disc will go to replication.
After the sign-off, any/all changes are chargable, and the client knows.
Now, if you do replace your Assets with the new Titles (in PrPro) please make sure that you replace the Assets in Encore correctly, so that you do not smurf your Encore Project. Both Jeff Bellune and Neil Wilkes have posted tons of replies on how to do this with no ill effects.
Good luck, and hope that all goes well,
Hunt
