    inline list with borders

    webmom24 Level 1
I have set up an inline list for a top navigation bar and want to make it look like "buttons" so I've formatted it with borders around each item. Looks great at "100%" but when you increase or decrease the page size, everything shifts and my text is no longer in my "boxes". I thought perhaps using ems instead of px size would help correct this problem and perhaps I'm on the right track, but so far everything continues to shift when I increase or decrease the page size. Does anyone have ideas on how to fix this... I'm wondering if I will be forced to create my site with percentages instead of fixed size divs for starters? I generally prefer to set a fixed size but perhaps this is faulty thinking?

At any rate here is the URL for what I have so far... I'm just setting up an empty template which has dummy content until I get the kinks worked out. Thanks for your help! :)

When you say "increase page size" surely you mean "increase text size"?

Anyhow, there is no way to avoid this with ordinary text horizontal menus,
unless you want to delve into some of the image replacement methods.

Well I'm not sure - I don't mean under the page tools where you can increase the text size. I'm talking about the bottom of the browser window where you can enlarge the page to 150%, decrease it, etc. I'm not even sure why I care... but thought if I could fix that problem I would.

            Thanks :)

              Specifically what browser does that?

Aha! I've got to start using it more.

Isn't that just a zoom, though? If so it shouldn't change the placement of
                  page elements should it?

Thanks Murray, that's what I thought. But it makes the OP's statement,
                      "Looks great

I wonder what webmom24 is doing to jumble the page,

                          Hi all,
If that is a "zoom" and shouldn't affect the placement of items on the page, and it does, then what? I'm not doing anything other than clicking on the + next to 100% so it has to be something in my code, right? I tried changing px to ems but it made no difference. I should also note that everything also shifts when I decrease the zoom.

I'll post the link to the page again... if there is something else that I'm not seeing I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction :) Test Page

                          Thanks all :)

There are various ways for zooming a page. Some older browsers just
resize the text, while modern browsers like Opera and lately also
Firefox 3 are also capable of scaling the entire page including images.
To do this properly, the entire page should be rendered again, which
the mentioned browsers do quite well.

IE 7 tries to implement a similar feature, but completey screws it up,
as usual. IE 7 just resizes everything without re-rendering, which makes
this feature almost useless, since it will cause horizontal scrollbars
                            on many (most?) pages.

                            >I'm not doing anything other than clicking on the +
                            >next to 100% so it has to be something in my code, right? I tried changing px
                            >to ems but it made no difference. I should also note that everything also
                            >shifts when I decrease the zoom.

I can't test IE 7 here, but in Opera and FF 3 it looks OK. Can you
upload a screenshot of the result you get in IE 7 and post the URL?
I would be interested to see how it looks there.

                              Hi Micha,
I did a screen shot - here is the URL where you can find it - IE7 Screenshot.

I'll be curious to hear what you think after viewing it.
