Jennifer Elkan Nov 16, 2009 4:26 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)Thanks Harm,
I did try this. The error message was: "An error occurred while applying security information to: I:\"file name" The media is write protected.
I think there is something else going on since I never had problems with this external drive using Vista. Any other ideas?

It could be the external. What is the connection type?
It could also be your new OS. Are you running as Administrator?
Unfortuntely, I do not know Win7, so there could be dozens of places to look there. The error message worries me.
Good luck,
Hunt

Jennifer Elkan Nov 16, 2009 6:30 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)The connection to the external drive is SATA. I have the option for USB. I am logged on as an administrator. I am at a bit of a loss on what to do.

John T Smith Nov 16, 2009 6:45 PM (in response to Jennifer Elkan)Since this appears to be a Win7 error, do a search at http://search.microsoft.com/search.aspx?mkt=en-US&setlang=en-US

Jennifer Elkan Nov 16, 2009 11:23 PM (in response to John T Smith)Looks like I just needed to reconnect the drive. I noticed people seem to be having this problem a lot with SD cards too. Thanks everyone for your help as always!

Looks like I just needed to reconnect the drive.
Great news and a simple fix. I like those best.
Thanks for reporting, as others will likely benefit from your "fix."
Good luck,

8. Re: Write protected disc, can't save using Win 7
SteveByItaly Nov 18, 2009 1:32 PM (in response to Jennifer Elkan)Dear Sir's
I have had the same problem;
A raid 0 with 4 hdisk. (maybe: G:\ and H:\)
Fisrt boot: Windows 7 says: write protected disc... ... G:\
Reboot: All worked fine.
Next day. First boot: write p... ... H:\
Reboot: write p... .... G:\
Reboot.... Reboot..... Reboot....
The problem is very very random.
The controller was a Promise FastTrack TX4310 with the last Vista driver (year 2007).
My only solution was to remove the controller. I hope in a driver update...
Or to buy a more reliable raid controller...
BTW: It worked all fine when I have had Vista installed.
The hardware is the same. I have had a clean install of Windows 7.
All the drives were reformatted. All the software was reinstalled.
It was a really "new" computer" with a new OS.
Maybe there is a bug in Win 7?
Sorry for my english.
Regards.

9. Re: Write protected disc, can't save using Win 7
Jennifer Elkan Jan 4, 2010 9:17 PM (in response to SteveByItaly)I'm just seeing this post again now. Steve, I don't know exactly what your problem would be but for me I ended up updating my SATA driver which I thought was the lasted version. I went to the motherboard website and found my motherboard and downloaded their latest driver. This however was NOT the latest driver. I got the latest driver from the SATA controller manufacturers website. Now I have no more problems with my SATA. I hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply.
Some days ago I downloaded from the Promise website the new driver for my card (Windows 7)
Now reinstall the card and try.
I think, and hope, it will work.Thanks.
