    Cropping

    RayTaylor1 Level 1

I am new to illustrator and I am having a hard time croping my bars in the below attachment.  Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?  I tried just using the cropping feature and it is not cropping.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks,

          1. Select the inside shape you want the bar to fit.
          2. Edit > Copy
          3. Select > Deselect
          4. Edit > Paste In Front
          5. With the Selection tool (black arrow) hold the shift key and click the bars

Here is a smal movie about making  clipping path for this art. Keep in Mind you will lose the stroke so you have to select the group that is clipped and give it a stroke again.

In either method you have to add the stroke back.

I just did that and for some reason once I crop the bars disappear and

leave only one bar behind the screen.  I do not know why it is not  cropping.

Could you resend the link?  I must be missing portions of it.  It  does not

                work.

                Thanks,

Try dragging the shape below the bar group in the layers panel.

Also I think if you want to add that stroke back you will have an easier time with the clipping mask.

BTW I am wrong about the stroke I see the bars have strokes already so no difference between the methods.

My first impulse was clipping mask, but if you tried Scott's Pathfider Crop sequence in the first reply, you'd be done.

You didn't follow directions correctly and most likely used the Direct Selection tool (the white arrow) to click the bars. You need to use the Selection tool (the black arrow).

I sent him a copy of the link and they are a bit confused and are  starting all over when they do not I have asked them to please return to the forum as it is not necessary for them to do anything over and that they were simply not successful in pasting the inner outline of the screen in front of the bars.

                        Hopefully they will return.

I gave up.  I redid the who thing and the cropping still did not work.  I

must have been missing something, and so I am going to move to something else.  Something must be wrong

                          with some of my layers.

Thanks for all of the help!

Hmm I did it with your file no problem.

                            1) Select inner area desired as crop and Edit > Copy

                            001.jpg

                            2) Select the bars

                            3) Edit > Paste In Front

                            003.jpg

                            4) Hold down the Shift key and click the bars with the Seletion Tool

                            5) Pathfinder > Crop

                            005.jpg
