I can tell you're using Windows (or at least, I hope so), but it would be useful to know which version of Director. Most folks use an xtra, like Buddy API, to deal with opening external files. That being said, I can't believe you didn't find anything when you searched for previous posts prior to starting this thread!
As Sean suggested, it's always worth searching the forums or even doing a google search before posting a question. The 'how to open a PDF' is one of the most asked questions. A Google search gives you a link to my FAQ on this at:
Thank you Sean for your sarcasim and critisism, and Director Dean for your help. What I posted doesn't throw an error, it just does nothing, and yes I am using windows (Windows 7) with Director version 11.
I would love to be able to do this without using an xtra that will cost me several hundred dollars. Is this not possible with Lingo or something? (I'm not a programmer, but willing to learn what I need)
If you look at the page where the buddy API xtra is sold, you will see that it allows you to use it without having to pay "several hundred dollars." It allows you to use up to 3 features per project for free. If you use more, it will throw a window saying that "This is an unregistered version... blah blah blah..."
Now THAT is something I unfortunately misread! I downloaded it and used it for the single feature I needed. Thanks again for pointing that out worked like a charm!
