Consequently, disabling the "preview icon" setting in Finder has no effect on these files.
I think you will have to create the folder with the preview option disabled before placing any files into them. Then the thumbnails will not be copied to the icon resource and the generic file type icon be used. To remove existing thumbnails, you may need to use a conversion tool like XnView and run a batch command. Of course then you could also use Photoshop. for future jobs, you may check the prefs file (Users:Rob:Preferences:Adobe:After Effects:9.0) and edit this line (set it to zero):
"Pref_RENDER_THUMBNAILS" = 00000001

Hey, thanks! Pref_RENDER_THUMBNAILS didn't do the trick, but there's another line in there, PREF_WRITE_THUMBNAIL_ICONS that did.
Googling that string returns exactly one hit, a throwaway tip in a guide about prepping rendered files for TAR archiving. Go figure.
