Searched the web but stil
l not clear what this is. Anybody? It's crashing my projects - which I don't believe are unreasonably large. Simple stuff. Still images. Particles. Little motion. Nothing outrgageuous. I have 12 gigs of memory installed. According to the memory and multiprocessing control panel - which I have set to langer ram previews - Total AE memory usage is 9.99. I'm crashing at only 4 gig memory usage total for the machine. Help will be appreciated. I have enable open gl checked.
Machine specs - i7 - 3.06 gHz - 12 gigs ram - Radeon 4800 - cs4
Please be more specific what settings and effects you use exactly. OpenGL usage should not matter in this case, this refers to a more generic memory error. Does the project render with MP turned off? You are also confusing things. The 4GB you see refer to the foreground instance. As a 32bit app, any singel instance cannot use more than that and on the contrary, I find it critical that it even reaches this ceiling. You should get an error long before that and AE flush memory to have breathing room, so there's a good chance you are using a "bad" effect/ effect with excessive settings/not MP-safe effect with a memory leak.
Just a shot in the dark...
You mentioned particles. Particle effects can use a lot of memory if you have many particles. Try turning down your particle count and see if that helps.
You might also benefit from some of the information in the "Memory (RAM) usage and storage" section of After Effects Help.
