    Can't open PDF file (sometimes)

I am trying to open a PDF file via a hyperlink but am seeing very perplexing behavior.

The file is in a directory with other files having similar names.  As an example, there is a directory with three files, named O10-GS6-2008Q4.pdf and O17-GS6-2008Q4.pdf  What happens is that:

O17-GS6-2008Q4.pdf can be opened without problem by Internet Explorer and Firefox.

O10-GS6-2008Q4.pdf can be opened without problem by Firefox.

O10-GS6-2008Q4.pdf can be opened by IE if you run IE directly and explicitly enter the filename.

It cannot be opened by IE if you are running IE in a ColdFusion environment, that is if you've brought it up while testing a local program in Dreamweaver or by connecting to a remote Coldfusion web site.  A "cannot locate file" message appears.

Some files with similar names (O4-G-2008Q4.pdf, for example) don't give an error message but the link never works.  You get an hourglass for as long as you care to wait.
