View > Show Bounding Box.
Also, notice the keyboard shortcut for Show/Hide Bounding Box is CtrlShiftB. That's a very easy combination to type in error, if you're accustomed to it as a shortcut for applying bold character formatting in other apps.
I do not remember making any changes to this setup

I use shortcuts all the time.
I prefer keyboard to mouse some times it is faster...
I had proborly press by mistake with our realizing it..
Since the Show/Hide Bounding Box is a general setting, it may also be the result of a, hopefully limited, preference corruption; if you discover other funny things, it may be time to Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Option+Shift during startup, or to <em><strong><a href="http://www.bugge.com/Family-and-friends/Illy/illy.html"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Move the folder</span></a></strong></em>
It is known to have occurred for users that most certainly have not accidentally used the shortcut, sometimes right after startup when it had worked right until the previous closedown.
