    Button dimensions

    Andy Bay Community Member

I'm having a bit trouble with buttons in Encore.

      Here's the deal:

I created button higlights for my menu by taking it to photoshop and editing the highlight layers. When I bring the menu back to encore, the button dimension seem to be too big which makes the buttons overlap. I double checked that the highlight layers do not include anything else but the small highlight picture (that shouldn't make the button dimensions that big).

I tried to resize the buttons in Encore, but that made the subpictures distorted. I also brought the menu back into Ps but the buttons seemed totally off in there. In other words the buttons seem to shift dimension/positions between encore and Ps.

I remember struggling with similar issues also on another project. Is there any tips on how to remedy this? Why are my button dimensions not the correct size?

      Any help will be appreciated!

      Thanks!

There have been some shifts if the size or par of the menu in photoshop is not correct.  This is not the common issue for your problem, however, which is usually operator error.

Remember that the "button" size for purposes of overlap in EN is the smallest rectangular that contains all the elements of that button group.  For example, I missed moving a button element I had copied the other day, and, after saving and moving back to Encore, see a big overlap alert that covered the whole menu.

I generally make my adjustments in PS, with the exception of simple moves of full button groups and text changes.  I also start with templates for my version (CS3), to ensure that I am not introducing the slight oddities of incorrect par/pixel size.

I would go back to your first menu and redo the changes you made then.  Make careful note of what you change, and if you get the overlap, try to sort out what you did.

            Andy,

When there are size issues between PS and En, it often suggests that there is a mismatch between the size of the Menu (and its PAR) and the Project Preset in En.

Also, remember Stanley's words about a rectangle that encompasses all elements in a Button [OK, that is a paraphrase.] All elements MUST fit into a rectangle (or square), and even an overlap at a corner of that rectangle will not work.

With a perfect match in dimensions and PAR, you should not get any size change. Check those dimensions and the PAR carefully.

In PS, you can check your rectangle by making that Button active in the Layers Palette, and then hitting Ctrl+T (Free Transform Tool), and looking at the Bounding Box. That will show you the full rectangle. Unfortunately, you can only see one Button at a time with this method, but you should be able to pick up any overlap in PS. You can also place Guides for these Bounding Boxes, while they are visible. This will then allow you to see where the Bounding Boxes are, with these Guides.

            Hope that this helps,
