I don't know how to change the size of the free distort dialog. However, for your particular transformation, you could draw a rectangle that covers your type, distort it using the free transform tool (or any number of other tools), and perform an envelope distort with top object.
The resulting "live" object will be editable to the extent that you can modify the envelope shape after the distortion is applied (and have the text conform). However, the text itself will not be "live" (editable) as it would be with the free distort effect.
Now that is cool.
Your're wrong, Harron. Just go to the same menu (Object>Envelope Distort) and choose Edit Content. The text becomes live and can be edited.
Outstanding, Larry! And I stand corrected.
I love it when I learn something new.

Thanks Harron! That's great. I'd never used that tool, nor really known what it was for. That's exactly what I needed! It's kind of odd that it automatically makes everything a curve, but I can work with that.
