This doesn't work for me at all.
I can see that the backgroundColor property would be userful in this context but it's not happening.
Is there another place where the background color can be set that I am overlooking (something that could potentially be overriding these calls)?
FWIW, I have tried cleaning and rebuilding, to no avail.

yea; i actually figured out last night that you had to finish with all of your import directives before you gave that tag.
can you explain this a bit more?
i am confused as to whether
1. flash needs a main sprite for stage in order to change color, or if
2. this is simply a protocol thing and you have to finish processing directives before making calls to SWF
