That looks like 2D art done to represent a 3D model by first making a primitive version of the cut away as two composite 3D effects and one hand drawn core.
Here is the 3D Effect with the 32D core the top is made of two quarter ellipses both with 40 point strokes that are grouped and rotated to 270º
the bottom is made of another quarter ellipse with the same two stroke widths an color and rotated 360º Getting them to align is a bit tricky but then one has to draw the core by hand at least it seems so.
You can then map the art to the surfaces of the two revolves ut t get it to be consistent I would then trace the whole thing.
