I've used After Effects to create short animations but want to know if it is reallistic to create a short .swf for the home page of a web site. I have an idea of what I want the home page to do (subtle, short movement) but have never embedded an exported swf from After Effects into a web page. Is this common practice now for web sites or is it better to try to figure out the movement in flash?
I think that the conventional wisdom is that you're usually better off doing the animation in Flash Professional if your output is to SWF. The SWF output from After Effects is more for people who don't have Flash Professional or aren't familiar with Flash Professional. One approach that you might look into is doing your animation work in After Effects, exporting to Flash Professional as XFL, and then finishing and creating the final SWF output file in Flash Professional.
