Harron K. Appleman Dec 15, 2009 1:41 PM (in response to nados)I think it's entirely a matter of personal preference. I've seen spectacular and abysmal illustrations created with all sorts of input devices.

Wade_Zimmerman Dec 15, 2009 2:18 PM (in response to Harron K. Appleman)That might be a question of judgment as to what you think is good or bad but if someone is looking for a tool that would work more intuitive I woud say the best out there is the Wacom what you make of it is another story.
I like the idea that i can do this fairly easy as an under sketch and the refine it later on without first doing a sketch on paper and then scanning it.
So it really depends on how you work best.

4. Re: What kind of usb drawing tools are useful to use with Illustrator?
nados Dec 15, 2009 2:59 PM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)I hear ya, and will go out and get a wacom tablet w/stylus and pretend to be a pro until i get better.
But it still does not answer my question about what most people use. I suspect that most pro's use a tablet w/ stylus and the rest of us newbees use a mouse.

Wade_Zimmerman Dec 15, 2009 8:37 PM (in response to nados)A Wacom Tablet is what most use for drawing thereare other tablets but most use the wacom and most use a tablet.

Wade_Zimmerman Dec 16, 2009 6:19 AM (in response to nados)Congratulations I think this was a wise choice.
So when I am looking for an illustrator and i want really good quotes (cheap prices) I am epecting realy cheap prices from you!

nados Dec 16, 2009 8:23 AM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)Yea.... you get what you pay for!
Actually, regarding my "looking for a good illustrator" post, it looks like my client doesn't want to pay the 10.5k estimated to do the work from an illustrator in California.
Dang!

Wade_Zimmerman Dec 16, 2009 11:15 AM (in response to nados)Well in the case that there is some serious fees involved then there is actually some one on this forum that does and that would be James Talmage..
I do not know what his practice is like but I have seen some very excellent automotive work. I t is only an observation so I am not speaking for him or making a recommendation.

JETalmage Dec 16, 2009 1:23 PM (in response to nados)But it still does not answer my question about what most people use.
Nados,
No one here can tell you what "most people use." I serously doubt that anyone here has done a scientific survey. Common sense tells me that "most people" use a mouse. All you are going to get here is what you've already received: completely anecdotal replies to such a question.
Harron is completely correct: It's a decision that has to be made by each user. I, for one, have bought Wacom tablets since they first appeared, and though I consider them excellent quality products, frankly I have used them only in few and far-between spurts. I've been at this long enough to know that there is no reason for me to keep "keeping up with the Joneses" just because alot of Joneses swear by them.
I just don't like them. I work in a wide range of styles, but still only use a stylus when wanting to do very loosey-goosey "painterly" scribbling in a raster program. I find them poorly suported in vector programs. I do, in fact, do much of my initial sketching onscreen, but almost always do it with a mouse.
Again, it's an entirely personal decision; like whether you wear a watch. You can't decide whether someone is a "pro" or not, based on whether they wear a watch or use a stylus pointing device.
You've bought one. See if you like it. I hope you enjoy it. Just don't mistakenly think that "most pros do" or "most pros don't" on the basis of your or my or anyone else's anecdotal proclamations--unless you're willing and able to, first, unambiguously define "pro," and second, conduct a scientific survey among them.
;-)

nados Dec 16, 2009 2:02 PM (in response to JETalmage)James,
I get your point, but i have to say that i'm suprised that you use a standard mouse more than the tablet pen. While one can get used to almost anything when there's no money or nothing else avaiIable, find it very awkward using a mouse when drawing, creating and manipulating shapes in illustrator, indesign, photoshop and even in my beloved Lightwave 3D modeler.
Ironically, i'm sure that after i use the tablet and pen for a while, i'll discover that it too can be more awkward to use for somethings than a mouse.
Wade - As I have repeatedly asked you, please STOP referring to me in your posts.
Does that go for me too? Now i'll have to take a look at your work, do you have a website or place where your work is showcased? - unless you'd prefer i not look!

Just as I'm surprised that many don't find a stylus to be too fidgety, inaccuate, and tedious, and their accompanying tablet cumbersome. But there you go. Some like them; some don't. Has nothing to do with professionalism.
Does that go for me too?
Of course not. Look at the top of the post. It was not written in response to you. But it would if you were to start continually heckling me without cause. But I certainly don't expect that from you or most adults. ;-)
