1. Re: PS > FW; color not right
ceefurn Dec 16, 2009 3:11 PM (in response to quality11)I don't believe Fireworks does CMYK, since it's primarily for web prototyping and design. Also, Photoshop keeps different proofing color profiles which may be what's causing the files to look different between Photoshop and other programs. You can see what color profile you're currently using by going to View>Proof Setup.

2. Re: PS > FW; color not right
quality11 Dec 16, 2009 3:16 PM (in response to ceefurn)Thanks. It says it's "working CMYK" so that wouldn't be the problem right? What else can we do?

3. Re: PS > FW; color not right
ceefurn Dec 16, 2009 3:19 PM (in response to quality11)Is there any reason you're using Fireworks for something that's CMYK? There's really no reason to use CMYK unless you're printing something, and you should generally stick to Photoshop or Illustrator if that's the case.

6. Re: PS > FW; color not right
Linda Nicholls Dec 16, 2009 3:55 PM (in response to quality11)sRGB color, the one used by Fireworks, is for graphics meant to be displayed on screen. Fireworks doesn't use CMYK color space, which is a more limited color space meant for printed works. Fireworks and most browsers ignore ICC color profiles, so there's no point in embedding them.

7. Re: PS > FW; color not right
quality11 Dec 16, 2009 7:13 PM (in response to Linda Nicholls)So, Linda, what do I do? Is there anything that can be done to make sure I'm rendering the original design correctly? For the color, do I change the PSD file to RGB first and then open it in FW? Or...? I'm not able to upload the actual PSD file b/c it's much too large. Says there's a 2 MB limit.

quality11 Dec 16, 2009 8:13 PM (in response to ceefurn)Hey Ceefurn. Good question. I forgot to explain that. It is a file (PSD) given to me by someone else to build.

9. Re: PS > FW; color not right
Linda Nicholls Dec 16, 2009 8:18 PM (in response to quality11)Set the colorspace to sRGB in Photoshop and then open it in FW.

10. Re: PS > FW; color not right
quality11 Dec 16, 2009 8:24 PM (in response to Linda Nicholls)Thanks Linda. Do I choose Monitor RGB or Windows RGB? I have Windows.

11. Re: PS > FW; color not right
quality11 Dec 16, 2009 8:26 PM (in response to quality11)Also, are you going to Proof Setup > Monitor RGB or whatever the correct choice is or are you going somewhere else to"Set the colorspace to sRGB"?

12. Re: PS > FW; color not right
Linda Nicholls Dec 16, 2009 8:59 PM (in response to quality11)In Photoshop choose Edit > Color Settings. For Settings choose North America Web/Internet.

13. Re: PS > FW; color not right
quality11 Dec 17, 2009 5:10 AM (in response to Linda Nicholls)Okay. Got it. That didn't change the color like the Proof Setup > Monitor RGB. Do I do both?

14. Re: PS > FW; color not right
quality11 Dec 17, 2009 6:57 AM (in response to quality11)I changed the PSD file to Proof Setup > Monitor RGB and Edit > Color Settings > Web/Internet and then opened the file in FW. The colors are not the same. The FW colors are off -- I checked them against the exisiting website (this is for the blog). The PSD file after changing the settings are right -- they match the site.
What do I do??????????????

15. Re: PS > FW; color not right
Jim_Babbage Dec 17, 2009 7:10 AM (in response to quality11)In the Color settings window, try turning off the color profile settings. I think this used to solve the issue.

pixlor Dec 17, 2009 10:29 AM (in response to quality11)Helpful reading:
http://www.viget.com/inspire/save-for-web-simply (follow up of http://www.viget.com/inspire/the-mysterious-save-for-web-color-shift/) Much of the info is in the comments, such as links to these two pages:
http://www.gballard.net/psd/saveforwebshift.html
http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/10/12/setting-up-photoshop-for-web-app-and-iphone-dev elopment/
It's a lot of info, but it boils down to this: you want to work in sRGB so you can see the colors as they are and then convert to sRGB (not assign) so that the colors are output to the file that way.
