    Is Joomla still around?

    Level 7
I can't get to www.joomla.org - can't even ping it. Is it just me, or
has the site (and the CMS!) disappeared?

              i see it too.

several months ago, my company changed ISPs, and shortly thereafter we
experienced several times where the modem/gateway thing would for some
unknown reason decide to block requests to and from the server that our
websites are on, but i could still see other sites just fine. the only
way to fix it was to reset it by unplugging it for three minutes and
plug it back in. it quit happening after a while, but i never was able
to find out what was causing it.

anyway, maybe something like that is happening with you and you just
need to reset your modem/gateway thing.

Thanks, Joe. I can't browse there from here. Can't ping it either.

Can't find any setting on any computer here in the house that would
prevent this. Next step is to see if it's my ISP for some unknown
                  reason.

Win, if you do an nslookup, does it return anything for Joomla.org? I'm
wondering if your ISP's DNS is down/messed up.

Not sure how to do that or how to evaluate the results. I went here

                      http://www.kloth.net/services/nslookup.php

and entered www.joomla.org into the Domain field. Got these results:

DNS server handling your query: localhost
                      DNS server's address: 127.0.0.1#53

                      Non-authoritative answer:
                      www.joomla.org canonical name = joomla.org.
                      Name: joomla.org
                      Address: 72.9.243.251

I also ran nslookup on my server here at home. I get:

                      Server machinename.servername.local
                      Address 192.168.1.5

                      Non-authoritative answer:
                      Name: joomla.org
                      Address: 72.9.243.251

So what does that tell me, and what do I do about it?

Thanks for the help. It's frustrating.

that shows that your DNS knows where the site is and the info is correct...
it comes up right away for me in FF, but in IE6 it takes a looooooooong time
to come up. Don't know why that is. did you try it in various browsers?

gateway (whatever is connecting you to the internet)?

That was one of the first things I did, as I explained previously. And
looked at all the settings on the modem, the router, the server, all
the computers. Rebooted all of them as well.

odds are that last hop is the one that Shaw is getting their service from.
You might talk to Shaw about it, but there's probably not much they can do
either - that other company has some router(s) down.

Just to resolve this: even though the problem was not within my ISP,
once they set me up to use their business account proxy server I was
able to get to the site.
