1. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
Wade_Zimmerman Dec 18, 2009 9:14 PM (in response to nados)First of all that is like 131/2 feet long and 8 feet high. That is the size of the room I am working in.
the 300 ppi and the 180 ppi is probably over kill for that size but regardless of the if the whole document has to rastered for output that is ne trip to the RIP.
Go to Effects>Document Raster Effects Settings and lower the ppi, it is probaby 300 ppi.

2. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
nados Dec 18, 2009 10:02 PM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)Hi Wade,
How's LV?
Yea, it's 13.5' x 7.5'. It's one of those exhibit displays that you stand at and sell your products from - like this:
The previous document was 8.8' x 7.3' and it gave me no problems. I created the new document the same way i created the previous one except it's 13.5' x 7.5'. I then copy/pasted all the objects over and since then the new document has been giving me the error message.
All of the photos are scaled to 18" x 12" on the display. BTW, The rep said that photos had to be at least 100ppi.
Here is what it's supposed to look like...

3. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
nados Dec 18, 2009 10:04 PM (in response to nados)I lowered the Document raster effects setting to screen 72ppi and it still gives me the error.

4. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
shunithD Dec 18, 2009 11:31 PM (in response to nados)D'you have Photoshop? If so, try doing the vector bits in Illustrator and then assemble the final image in PS. You can save as a tif at 100ppi. hat should be more than enough for your needs.
The other problem could be the images you're importing into the AI file. Size them to the excat required size at the exact end ppi... i.e. 100 (edited to correct) or 72 ppi. That will also get the file size down.
Edited to add on the content below:
Re read your post... i think your best bet is to finish it in PS.
Alternatively:
1/ Make two files (split down the centre or wherever). Then get the printer to assemble them as one at the time of printing.
2/ Make the file / document proportionately smaller (increase the ppi of the images accordingly) and the get the printer to scale it up.

5. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
Wade_Zimmerman Dec 19, 2009 12:25 AM (in response to shunithD)I have to tend to agree with this.
I would
1. resize all the images to 100% of the reproduction size at say 125 ppi then I would set the Document raster image size to the same.
I do not know how you are exorting but I assume as a Tiff I would then set that at 125 ppi.
Other wise save as a pdf or as a ai file.
If you save t as an ai file then open it in Photoshop and save it asa tiff from Photoshop.
if this still is not working then reduce everything in half and do it half size.but in this case the resolution of the images would be 250 ppi because in the end you will out put it to 200% and print from AI.
Is this being printed inkjet?
By the way very nice work!
And i think that guy I recommended would do a very good job for you as grouchy as it might seem.

6. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
nados Dec 19, 2009 9:10 AM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)ShunithD & Wade,
Thanks for the help - I think you guys are saying about the same thing. I was on the verge of doing it in photoshop anyway. The problem is that i have a Monday due date and this issue is causing me a great deal of time.
How can an illustrator document with exactly the same objects, and document setup parameters, work without problems with an artboard size of 8.8'x7.3' and not work with the artboard width increased by just 4.7'? I just went from standard to wide screen, The only thing thats bigger is the vector background and top banner. Everything else is the same size as before.
I am running 64bit win7 with 12gb of ram - this must be a bug or design flaw in Illustrator for it to choke with just 4 300ppi and 3 180ppi images!

7. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
Wade_Zimmerman Dec 19, 2009 9:17 AM (in response to nados)Illustrator is 32 bit only and has a limit of 3GB or RAM usage, it is more a limitation than a bug.
t has a limit to the size of a tiff i can export for instance and you may have reached that limit.
Try opening it in Photoshop before starting all over and then save it either as a psd or tiff.

8. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
nados Dec 19, 2009 9:50 AM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)Wade,
the vendor says:
All of our files are converted into TIFs before they are put through our printer ripping software.
So if you’re creating your file in Photoshop, when you import vector-based
logos or type, create the type or enlarge the logo at 100% of the final size in Illustrator
before importing it to Photoshop. When you enlarge outlined type/logos in Photoshop,
vector-based images will be blurry/pixelated.They want us to send them the AI file if working in illustrator.
I have a few more questions about illustrator before i start working in photoshop if you don't mind:
1. the images placed in the illustrator document are jpg format. Does it matter or should i convert them to tiff in photoshopbefore placing them in illustrator?
2. I should lower the ppi of images to 125 or 150ppi in photoshop. Other than changing the resolution in the "Image Size" panel, "Constrain Proportions" and "Resample Image" should be checked in order to leave the image width and height size alone?
3. should the default document settings and raster effects size normally be ok?
I have attached there design guide here below...

9. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
Wade_Zimmerman Dec 19, 2009 10:11 AM (in response to nados)nados you are a little confused that's all I think things are ll right and you are probably set to go with out going to Photoshop.
1. Your file is probably fine as is
2. Make certain you images are linked and not embedded
3. Your Images are probably ok as far as they are for the the specs required do not lower the resolution just make certain they are linked.
You may have to reimport them and in the place dialog make certain link is checked.
4. The Raster Image Effects setting is fine leave it as is.
5. The jpegs are fine lee your images as is if that was what was supplied to you and they look clean.
6. When saving the file save as .AI format and in the AI save as option dialog uncheck include linked files
(you will send them the jpegs as well as the AI file.)
7. Send the images in what ever format they are now since that is jpeg leave it be just make certain the dimensions are the same as is being used in the document at 100%.
8 Make Certain you select the text and got Type> Create Outlines before saving the file.
9 Do not export the file to any other format.
10 Send the printer production house the AI file and the Jpegs you will be fine.
You should not have a problem with this file.

10. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
nados Dec 19, 2009 10:40 AM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)Wade,
Thanks a bunch for your help! And my real name is Nelson - it's no secret.
So my illustrator document is probably ok as you say except that due to 32bit limitations and the size of my artboard, i can't add any shadows or save/export as a rasterized image. I can only save as a AI file.

11. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
nados Dec 19, 2009 11:10 AM (in response to nados)- I have reset the document to default "High Resolution" settings.
- Under "Custom transparency flattener options" i checked "Convert All Text to Outlines".
- When saving: "include linked files" is not checked. just "Create PDF Compatable File" and "Use Compression".
- When saving for the printer, i save a CS3 AI.
I'm just bumbed that i can't add drop shadows due to running up against the limits and getting the "exceeded" error message.

12. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
Wade_Zimmerman Dec 19, 2009 12:36 PM (in response to nados)Are you sure? If you are sure, do this in photoshop create a document slightly larger than the image you want give the drop shadow fill it with the color you want turn the ayer into transparent layer give it a feather save it and place it into AI as a link image and place it behind the image.

Aarmed Dec 19, 2009 12:40 PM (in response to nados)You're confusing dpi with ppi, they're very different.

14. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
Wade_Zimmerman Dec 19, 2009 12:48 PM (in response to Aarmed)That's why I told him to leave the images at the resolution they were.
BTW nelson you can probably do the drop shadow in Photoshop and do it only once but link it three times

I see, just place the shadow uder the text or photos.... good idea. I didn't think of that!

16. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
Wade_Zimmerman Dec 19, 2009 2:22 PM (in response to nados)I case of the text copy the text to Photoshop the give it a blur and feather and save it and import that and place it under the text in AI. Keep it linked.
Nice work by the way.

17. Re: Having problem with "artwork size & resolution exceeds the max that can be rasterized"
BlueWaterDesigns Oct 21, 2010 8:14 AM (in response to nados)I just discovered a fantastic work around for this. Reduce the size of the text...then apply the drop shadow. Select Object>Expand Appearance. Then scale the text to the larger size that you need. Awesome.
