1. Re: Coloring a greyscale image from photoshop in InDesign
TwitchOSX Jan 4, 2010 11:14 AM (in response to TwitchOSX)Guess I should have searched around a little. Appears that it has to be non transparent and has to be a TIF file. Looks like it cant be a PSD file. I got it to work, but it SHOULD work on a transparent PSD file. Oh well.

P Spier Jan 4, 2010 11:18 AM (in response to TwitchOSX)It will work on any non-transparent grayscale or bitmap mode raster image, including .psd, .tiff or .jpg. The key is the transparency.

Petteri_Paananen Jan 4, 2010 11:18 AM (in response to TwitchOSX)If you want to mix some color from your swatches panel to your grayscale image´s black, just select your image with direct select tool (white arrow)

4. Re: Coloring a greyscale image from photoshop in InDesign
TwitchOSX Jan 4, 2010 11:31 AM (in response to P Spier)Hmm. My image originally had a transparent background (only one layer in the document)
So, I added a 2nd layer below it and filled that layer with white. That didnt work so I merged the 2 layers to create one layer without transparency. That still didnt work so I saved it as a TIF file and now it works fine.

TwitchOSX Jan 4, 2010 11:32 AM (in response to Petteri_Paananen)I was doing that but because of the transparency or file type, it wasnt working. Now that I have the image as a non transparent TIF file, it works fine. I wish it would work with a transparent PSD file though. That would make things easier and save HD space.

6. Re: Coloring a greyscale image from photoshop in InDesign
P Spier Jan 4, 2010 11:45 AM (in response to TwitchOSX)Try flattening instead of merging the layers. Sounds like ID still thinks there's transparency in the image.

7. Re: Coloring a greyscale image from photoshop in InDesign
TwitchOSX Jan 4, 2010 11:55 AM (in response to P Spier)I just did this with a different image. This time, the original file was a single (locked) layer without transparency. I saved it as a greyscale PSD and colored it in InDesign with no problems.

8. Re: Coloring a greyscale image from photoshop in InDesign
Printer_Rick Jan 4, 2010 1:57 PM (in response to TwitchOSX)This may or may not be a viable option:
1. Change to Monotone in Photoshop. Select your ink color and linear curve, update link in InDesign
2. Need ID to convert the ink to process? In Swatch Panel: Ink Manager, click on spot icon beside ink name to change it.
3. Need to change the color and not go back to Photoshop? Make your new swatch in InDesign defined as spot. Go to Ink Manager. Restore the original Monotone ink to spot. Alias this to the new spot ink. Need the new color to print as process? In Ink Manager click on the icon beside the new ink to make it process (leave the original monotone ink as spot).

BobLevine Jan 4, 2010 2:03 PM (in response to Printer_Rick)I'd be more tempted to use a color layer effect in Photoshop. If you need more than one color effect, then layer comps would come in handy here. You can import the InDesign swatches into Photoshop to make sure you have the same colors.

Printer_Rick Jan 4, 2010 2:17 PM (in response to BobLevine)Gradient map adjustment layer in Photoshop could yield the same effect as colorization of grayscale in InDesign, the only thing is it wouldn't work on a grayscale mode image.

Here's another thought. Open the transparent PSD. Make a new layer. Set background color to white. Layer: new layer from background. Now hide the background layer and save the PSD.
Update in InDesign. Control or right click on the image. Go to "Object Layer Options" Make the background visible here.
You are free to colorize the image now. And you didn't have to save an additional copy out of Photoshop.

Ads-R-Us Jan 5, 2010 9:55 AM (in response to Printer_Rick)I tried that method, and while it worked to colorize the image, I'm left with a white background for that image.
Did I miss something?

P Spier Jan 5, 2010 10:13 AM (in response to Ads-R-Us)I think Rick was suggesting the background layer should only be white, and that the object itself should be on it's own layer with transparency. then you can turn the background on or off.

Printer_Rick Jan 5, 2010 10:48 AM (in response to Ads-R-Us)No you didn't miss anything.
When you make the background layer visible it becomes a non-transparent image. At that point the image has both a fill and a mask. By default the fill is black (direct selection) and the mask is white.
The mask can inherit the container color. So if the image is over a solid red background you can color the container red, in which case you mimic transparency.
If however you need it to be transparent over a dynamic background you need to apply the image color in Photoshop. Monotone is one easy way to do it.
You can even create transparency if all you have is a flat image to work with:
1. Mode: Duotone. Make it a monotone
2. Load channel as selection
3. Invert
4. Type D
5. Layer: New Layer: Solid fill color. Choose the foreground color.
6. Hide all the other layers. All white has been replaced with transparency
Now if you update in InDesign underlying objects will be visible in the mask.
