    Navigation from Fireworks

    Warrior of Rohan Level 1
Building first website so I am trying to do it right first time. I want to create my initial navigation buttons in Fireworks so I can have rollovers, effects on mouse over etc. I get the buttons the way I want them but when I put them into Dreamweaver they are just an image with none of the effects I created in Fireworks. Is Fireworks a good way to create the initial navigation buttons? I like being able to customize the buttons with color, fills etc. that Fireworks has. Thanks for helping the newbie.

          Rohan,

Oh, if all our problems were this easy! Just kidding. I think your problem might be solved by using the "Copy to Clipboard" in File>Export>Save as Type drop down menu in Fireworks. When I was using Fireworks with Windows ME, and I think XP, too, I had to use the Copy to Clipboard option. I think it was once explained as a little quirk.

Then in Dreamweaver put your insertion point where you want your Fireworks button and right click, then click paste. Pour over the help section in Fireworks for exporting and get familiar with all the options. There is also an Insert Fireworks HTML command in the Insert>Interactive Images menu that you can play around with. I used this once recently after finding that the Copy to Clipboard doesn't seem to exist now that I am operating Dreamweaver in Windows Vista.

Note: I am pretty sure the "Copy to Clipboard" command is in Save as Type but it might be in another drop down menu on the Export screen. Also, I think you need to make sure "Export slices" and "include areas without slices" are selected. I have gone through this problem myself and got over it. Perhaps someone else will add some light to the subject, too.

            This is good.

Do not use FW to write your HTML. Use it to create your graphics. Build
            your HTML in DW.

Here's how to do your navigation -

Check the uberlink and MacFly tutorials at PVII -

and the Navbar tutorial/articles at Thierry's place

Or this one (more recent article):

Thanks for the help and the links to the websites. It just looked simpler to create a "on mouse over" in Fireworks than creating two images and using them in Dreamweaver. Of course I havenot gotten it to work in Dreamweaver yet so maybe its not so simple. So its best to us FW for the graphics and do all HTML inside of DW? Thanks

                Yes, that's best.

In DW, select an image, use the behavior panel to apply the Swap Image
behavior, within the behavior dialog select the original image, browse to
and select the new image, and click OK. It's that easy.
