Size of XML returned from a server

I'm building an app and have the choice of repeated calls to the server for data,  or to get the whole dataset as one lump of XML and parse it with E4x and submit changes back as deltas to the server.

I realise that reading in the whole dataset in XML in one go has limitations in terms of generating and transferring larger amounts of data upfront and slower e4x parsing on larger sets.

Given this choice, I'm curious as to typically what kind of sizes of XML (in bytes/nodes) are  people comfortably processing?

For the moment I have no requirement to shift to using AMF or any other form of object transfer.
