Captiv8r Jan 14, 2010 9:53 AM (in response to RoboColum(n))LOL, I'm with you on the triviality!
Out of curiosity, what happens if you press the spacebar after pasting? My thought is perhaps it's looking for a keypress to activate.

3. Re: Cut/Paste into Search does not activate List Topics button
Amebr Jan 14, 2010 3:21 PM (in response to RoboColum(n))The only thing I can suggest is on the PCs where the List Topics button doesn't activate, try someone else's (feel free to comment on the apostrophe -don't know if that's right ) help file, for example one of the Microsoft ones, and see if it shows the same behaviour.
Maybe there is something funny about the install of the help viewer on those PCs - an old version or something?

4. Re: Cut/Paste into Search does not activate List Topics button
RoboColum(n) Jan 15, 2010 1:39 AM (in response to Amebr)Sorry I should have said that we had tried other CHM files on the PCs with the same result. For instance on PCs where the paste did not activate the List Topics button, this was the behaviour on all CHMs. Likewise on the PCs where the button was activated it was the same on all PCs. So the problem is PC related.
Rick. A space after the paste does activate the button. Likewise a backspace so you are probably right. No sure this will meet the exacting standards of our test lead. If it doesn't, maybe I'll print out a copy of our largest help file in 42pt typeface and beat him around the head with it. BTW I love your slight on searches. I'd better not get you started with Air Help then .

RoboColum(n) Jan 15, 2010 2:00 AM (in response to RoboColum(n))Just to add that we have checked the version of HH.EXE installed on these PCs and they are all the same (version 5.2.3790.2453). Any other ideas would be more than welcome.

Peter Grainge Jan 15, 2010 2:19 AM (in response to RoboColum(n))Now that you are down to this level...
Worth trying comparing IE versions and settings? I believe the help viewer relies on some parts of IE so maybe a difference there could account for different behaviour.

7. Re: Cut/Paste into Search does not activate List Topics button
RoboColum(n) Jan 15, 2010 5:49 AM (in response to Peter Grainge)Ooh! That was a good call Peter but unfortunately got me nowhere. We have users on IE6, IE7 and IE8 some of which in each case where the cut/paste works and some where it doesn't. Don't really want to spend time comparing settings when it is SO unlikely that anyone will ever find this. The CHM is after all just a backup for us in case the user's internet is down. Thanks for everyone's help but I think it is about time for us to file this one in the "Who Cares" category .

Peter Grainge Jan 15, 2010 6:26 AM (in response to RoboColum(n))I was thinking maybe the product manager should be doing the audit of the settings. Should keep him out of your way for a while.

9. Re: Cut/Paste into Search does not activate List Topics button
Captiv8r Jan 15, 2010 7:22 AM (in response to Peter Grainge)LOL! Loved Peter's suggestion!
I'm very interested in this situation. On my own PC, some CHMs allow me to right-click and will present a typical Copy/Paste and other items menu. Others seem to totally ignore the action. I've been scratching my head over that for a long while now. At least a few months. I figure my situation may be related to this situation.

Captiv8r Jan 15, 2010 7:25 AM (in response to Captiv8r)Hey Colum
Doesn't the fact that ALL CHMs on those PCs sort of alleviate your having to look further? I mean, you cannot be expected to control Operating System behavior from your CHM file, no?
Sure it's an enigma, but I would think this fact sort of lets you off the hook.

RoboColum(n) Jan 15, 2010 10:06 AM (in response to Captiv8r)I couldn't agree more Rick. I guess I am just curious as to why this is happening. Anyway as it's gone 6pm and it's a Friday I think I'll go home to my fridge of cool beer
