1. Re: Disney Style 2d Rotoscoping Animation with Photoshop CS4
Marian Driscoll Jan 15, 2010 3:23 PM (in response to l1o1t1r1)You just load the film clip and add a new layer to it. New layers default to being empty so you can easily see the film on the bottom layer. When you are done tracing, hide the bottom layer.
I don't think they used Photoshop on Snow White.
EDIT: I just browsed some more of those videos and noticed many are from modern day wannabe animators tracing Disney animation. (like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6dCGAc_T_I )
I would advise against this if you want to learn animation. Rotoscoping is for getting motion and pose cues, not tracing detail. You still need to use your own noggin when drawing and in cleanup.

Bill Hunt Jan 15, 2010 3:38 PM (in response to l1o1t1r1)As for embedding the file, you would probably first need to download it (several ways and services), and then strip out the FLV (usually, the file will come in as an FLV in an SWF container, but this might differ ripper to ripper, and service to service). Then load that FLV (or similar) onto your server.
Personally, I'd stick with the link, such as you posted, as there could well be © issues, plus a lot of unnecessary work.
Also, you can do similar in AfterEffects, as it has many more animation tools.
I don't have PS-Extended, so I do not know its full capabilities with rotoscoping, but hope to add it with the next upgrade. I'd be curious how your project goes.
Good luck,
Hunt

l1o1t1r1 Jan 15, 2010 4:17 PM (in response to l1o1t1r1)Marian thank you for the reply and the laywer note.
When the rotoscoping is done from live action how is that applied to a an image for background to be used for tracking - example 1920 x 1080 pixels and the background is 1920 x 2160 so a basic timing can be seen for the track of the character or characters on the background (I would think the background would have to do some type of scrolling)
I to have seen some of those rotoscoping from an animated film the link I posted said it was from a live action. Anyway rotoscoping from live action is what I want to do.
Bill thanks for keep to the link tip and about after effects - again the videos and tuts does not show traditional rotoscoping by using it to mak out and object or character, etc if you have some links to it being used to do trasditional rotoscoping please post.
Thaks

Bill Hunt Jan 15, 2010 5:04 PM (in response to l1o1t1r1)If you have not already seen this ARTICLE, it might be of use.
Now, do you have PS-Extended, or just the "plain" PS?
Good luck, and sounds like a neat project.

Michael L Hale Jan 15, 2010 6:07 PM (in response to l1o1t1r1)I think Bill is right, you should do this in After Effects.
But as you asked how to rotoscope in Photoshop here is how I have done it. I have only worked with smaller video, don't know about having the document size layer than the frame size.
Choose File-ImportVideo Frames to Layers... Unless you have a killer system you will want to limit the number of frames you import. Each frame will be on it's own layer and you can edit the as needed. I just run a few filters and maybe so some painting on each layer.
When you are done with one set of frame export to video and start the next set.

No. The masking and paint tools have not been changed notably, only other areas of the program.

Bill Hunt Jan 16, 2010 9:04 AM (in response to Michael L Hale)Michael,
I wonder if Layer Comps might be helpful in doing the "animation." I've used that for very short bits, Importing the resultant PSD's into PrPro as 1 Frame images (set in Edit>Preferences>General>Still Duration) into a 29.97 FPS Project. For longer pieces, I just use AE, but then end up doing much of that work in PS because of its power.
Now, with PS-Extended (do not have it yet), things might be even easier, because of its video-handling capabilities vs regular PS.
Either way, patience will be a virtue!
Hunt
PS - one nice thing about PS, as of CS, is the ability to work in a New Image Preset for the exact Video specs., including PAR, and with Title Safe and Action Safe Guides. Throw in a Grid, and one has about all of the alignment tools needed.

10. Re: Disney Style 2d Rotoscoping Animation with Photoshop CS4
Michael L Hale Jan 16, 2010 10:30 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)I think working with video is a lot easier with the extended version. You don't really need to work with layers( or layer comps ) as you can edit the frames directly. However I like the import as frames so I can have the original frame as a reference while I'm working on a copy.
I have to say that I have only done two very short animations so there may be better ways to use Photoshop to rotoscope. What I have have done is 'A Scanner Darkly' type look and even I will admit it wasn't very good. I guess I don't have the patience to do better or longer length clips,

Thanks for that input. Since most of my work has gone to video, PS-Extended keeps calling me.
Appreciated,

I wasn't really addressing anything legal, although that might be a concern as well.
I just noticed some people tracing what other people traced. 3rd generation art looks sloppy. I see you are correctly aiming for the original filmed reference material.
