Best VP6 video to Flash converter
JayNewWeb Jun 9, 2008 1:24 AMI've spent many months learning to optimize the creation of
videos in Premiere Pro for business presentations that combine
on-camera interviews with screen captures containing text and
outputting that to Flash. It has been an extremely intense learning
process -- especially considering I'm a businessman who is not the
least bit experienced in any of this (steps involve deinterlacing
and other modifications in VirtualDub, etc, etc).
Now, I'm down to just trying to determine the best converter to convert my Premiere Pro movies to Flash 8.
I've determined that VP6 is best for my purposes (until H.264 is more readily adopted and compatible, which is not the case yet for my needs).
I can look at small samples on-screen but there are always variations depending on the actual content of the samples (and tweaks in the settings that don't always match up exactly from one converter program to the next), and of course, the biggest issue is that my system may not be entirely indicative of how things will compare to most others.
I've reduced it to three obvious choices:
1. Sorenson Squeeze (I'd have to learn more about settings; my first test gave a file half the size of the others but half the quality as well; I'll need to play with it more); I had it set to VP6 2-pass VBR, as with the other tests I did.
2. Flix
3. Flash Video Encoder -- the one that comes with the Production Premium CS3 Suite. This offers no options to specify 2-pass or VBR and I don't know if it's doing it automatically or not.
My tests have all tried to target the same 15 fps and 512 bitrate range. It think Flix is doing slightly better than the Flash Video Encoder from my initial tests but I'd have to test a lot more... so I thought I'd just ask what's usually best.
Note that the built-in VP6 exporter in Premiere Pro doesn't seem up to par compared to Flix and Flash Video Encoder.
I'm leaning towards the assumptions that Sorenson will give me tons of controls if I need them but I'm guessing I'm not likely to ever need them, and that Flix is going to give me as good quality as I can ever get from VP6 2-pass and that it will probably also give me all the controls I'm likely to need. I'm not doing a lot of batching and mass production. It's just me making a few videos (and showing some samples to others on the web for feedback).
I assume it's really down to Sorenson or Flix and the question is simply if I need the extra flexibility and controls that Sorenson offers (I'll likely look at either Sorenson Flash Pro or Flix Pro). I also assume variable bitrate is best.
I'd sure appreciate advice on this.
Thanks!
