I don't understand "can't work under that slice."
You can make true polygon slices, however. There's a little triangle at the bottom right corner of the button to select the slice tool. Click that, and it will expand, giving you the choice of the rectangular slice tool or the polygon slice tool.
Yes, you'll get the red guidelines that define the extent of your slices, no matter what.
Can you post your image, or a screen shot of what you're trying to do?
View > Slice Guides to toggle them OFF.
And/or select the Hide Slices/Hotspots Toolbar command so you can work with your objects.
Thanks for the quick reply, I did what you said, and it hides the red guide lines but my buttons dont work under that line even though the red guide lines are not visible.
Did you Hide Slices?
Select the Pointer Tool and click your Object? It should get selected.
What happens when you mouse over the 'star' object? Do you get the 'object selection' bounding area appear? Bounding area should appear red when you mouse over it? Yes/No!
Also, go to your Layer Panel and make sure that your object/Layer is not 'locked'. Look for little 'padlock' icons next to the Layers. If you see it, click it, to toggle it to 'off'.

Also make sure you are not in PREVIEW mode in the document window.

Whenever I mouse over my stars they are red and when I select them they turn blue, none of my layers are locked. When I preview my document all the starts above the red line work, everything below doesn't. I even previewed in browser to see if it only did it in fireworks, but it does the same thing in my browser. I made the original image in photoshop, and exported to fireworks. Could that maybe be the problem? Even after I hide the slice guide lines I am still unable to make the buttons work.
Can you post the original .png file and a link to your output/browser version?
First, I see that you have star shapes in your image, but that doesn't mean you need a star shaped slice. You can use a small square that is centered on your star. That might make creating your slices easier. All you have to do is drag lines out from the rulers at left and top, place two pair around each star, and then drag a slice from one corner to another.
Noting this leads me to my second point: images have to be rectangular. If you want to swap the L-shaped area, then you need to swap two images, not one. This may be why you can't make buttons below the top guide line of your L-shaped slice.Because Fireworks needs to make a rectangular image it defaults to an area that encompasses the slice - the area you can't make buttons in. It's locking out the non-sliced area that will still need to be part of the image, since that part will swap, too.
Thank you pixlor, I did not know that I couldnt slice an image like that. Back to the drawing board then. Thanks everyone for your help.
Good catch pixlor.
I got the same result as Raven.
Thanks Darrell! Yeah...no matter how much we try to break out of the box...we're still stuck with rectangles!
RevenMurder, you're welcome! Sorry it isn't an easy answer.
thanks for the help about the shapes like slices, sphers and others.favour me by giving more information on it.
