I was wondering if anybody had an advice on sizing the side layer texture for the shatter effect so that it appeared photorealistic. I am working in 1080p and a layer with the comp size, regardless of the picture, always seems to be banded in the colors of the layer. Thanks!
Shatter is 8bit, so whatever you do, it won't get better. Limitation in the effect. You can at best try adding some noise to make the banding less obvious or use special de-banding plug-ins (Boris Continuum, Tinderbox), but that's where it ends.
