I can imagine your frustration - we see it a lot in this forum since the launch of PRE8. However as your reason to upgrade does not work you can at least get a refund rom Adobe. As this is only within thirty days of purchase you should hurry - don't wait for a fix that is unlikley to come (some forum users did wait and have then lost their chance of a refund).
Insanity is hereditary, you get it from your children
This is an ongoing problem with Premiere elements 8 and there is no fix for it . But there is a workaround which works well and sucessfully .
Rename the .mts file to .m2ts file and then import the file to Premiere elements 8 .
To get the extention make sure you have unchecked the option of the " Do not show Extension" in the View tab of Folder options in the tools menu.
BTW, have you activated the Main Concept element in your program?
It should activate automatically. But you may need to use it so that the program can activate it. (This is all assuming you've registered the program on the Adobe site.)
One way to activate it is to output something -- even just a short clip -- as an MPEG.
Since Main Concept's codec pack is responsible for the AVCHD thumbnails, this MIGHT make a difference. So might ensuring you've got the latest version of Quicktime.
You can also manually add codecs from the Main Concept site if you'd like.

Wow that work around of renaming it worked! Clearly this is a bug in adobe.
And I just filed for a refund too, but I know they will reject it since I'm over my 30 days. So 2 support cases and techs telling me stupid stuff and it was as easy as this.
I'm glad I got my work-around. Just sad I wasted so much time.
For most issues, I recommend that users come here first, as the "support" is better in the fora, than over the telephone (or e-mail), even if one pays for the "big package" of support.
There are some sharp folk here, and over on Muvipix.
Good luck, and let us know how it works out,
I did search the forums before and I think I even posted something (under a diffrent screen name probably schlista or schlista2...everytime I come here it keeps making me do a new screenname...well every few months or so).
I have already renamed all my .mts files to .m2ts by SHIFT-Right Click on the folder and choosing to open a new command window.
Then I type ren * *.m2ts and voila :-)
Now I need to let organizer do it's thing overnight and I should be good to go.

I feel your pain. Just tonight, the forum would not let me log in with Bill Hunt (had been the_wine_snob for over a year!), no matter how many times I tried. After a dozen attempts, I was back to Bill Hunt, and not WAHunt3. Oh well, at least we have some parts of the forum, regardless of who we are, at the moment.
Good luck, and glad that you have a workaround,
