Unable to  place text where I want it.

    ukracer999

      HI

I have used Dreamweaver at a low level for some years but all very basic usage.

I have the need for a fast quick and functional web site until I can write a better version so I am using a template. (which I actually quite like)

This template is doing 90% of what I need but when it comes to placing text in the right place using a place holder it does not stay where I want it.

This is the site as its not advertised as live yet. to see what I mean.www.mistatees-grafix.co.uk

Any pointing to tutorials outlining the basic of my problem would be fantastic.

      Thanks in advance

          Update

I have read quite a few articles on CSS today and it seems likely that my problem arises as I am trying to use a template created using layers but I am now trying to use AP Div  to place my images and text.

Does anyone know how to get the two working together or a quick way of converting the tags??

It seems the whole issue is surround absolute positioning and relative positioning.

            Hi,

the way I saw it, you can put this square with your mouse wherever you want. Look here:

The short answer:  Use default CSS positioning (which is no positioning at all) & learn to use CSS margins, floats, padding and text-align.

              http://alt-web.com/DEMOS/3-CSS-boxes.shtml

The long answer: Don't use APDivs (aka layers) as a primary layout method.  It may appear to be the easiest way to work with DW, but is in fact much more difficult to control unless you fully understand when you should and shouldn't use it.

Why APDivs cause problems for newbies -

Sadly, there are no shortcuts to web design.  A well-crafted, pre-built template can help you get started, but without a basic understanding of HTML and CSS, things could get screwed up in a hurry.  Take time to do some homework or hire a professional to help you.

Yes I can do that in dreamweaver and it looks fine but when viewed in a browser it moves.

As I say I think its to do with CSS and the fact I have used Ap div to layout. (which is bad practise) but the way I have always done it in the old versions.

I need to try and understand CSS but its a black art.  lol

I dont doubt all you say is correct Nancy.

First of all thanks for the pointers for reading material .

I can fully understand why you would say enlist the help of a proffesional but the main reason I need to get a basic web site up quickly is because ebay is useless and I have had a rogue trader bidding on and winning my items for the past two weeks. Its not a vast amout I make per item but as he has won all the bids and not paid for ANY I am unable to sell them to real buyers so I am now 500 pounds down so treading water  and its starting to swirl.

Ebay will not allow me to prevent Zero fedback bidders which would solve my problem in a stroke so I need a quick snazy looking website to allow me to point people to this site.

I can knock up a basic one using tables but thought this would be quicker so I can get on with sorting out the mess this guy is leaving!

Thanks for your reply though it is very helpful..

                    A little bit OT:

                    Hi Nancy,

of course you are right again with your exhortations, to 200%!

Again and again I see myself looking for the supposed fastest, easiest way for a problem-solution. This is a short-sighted behavior, I admit it. Many of the questions and helpful, professional replies in this forum are stimulating my sincere desire for knowledge, certainly from other DW-Users too. And slowly but surely, and more and more I try to learn to solve my problems via css and so on.

Unfortunately for people like me, you have a little bit a "home advantage". Even the German edition of DW is teeming of English technical terms! Poor boy, which I am, always a dictionary has to be next to me. Ok, in spite of everything, I'll keep up, this field of topics is too much interesting! And in my case: "This way is one of my little goals!"

                    Kind regards,

                    Hans-G.

I feel your pain.  That's grounds for removal from eBay.

In the short-term, use tables.  Later, when you have more time to learn CSS, switch over.

                        Hans,

I don't know about the German Edition, but in my experience all Software has a technical jargon learning curve.    When I began this profession, Photoshop's Help menus drove me crazy.  I didn't know what they were talking about.

On the other hand, code is universal. It doesn't matter if English is your 1st, 2nd or 9th language.  If you can understand HTML, CSS and other programming languages, DW is much easier to learn.

Keep up the good work.  It really does get easier.

                          Guten Morgen Nancy,

                          Nq.jpg

So far I agree with you. But now, please look here:

                          Header 1Header 2
                          Nc.jpg

You know this view, and you instantly can recognize the meaning from every of these English words. Not so do I, the man with a foreign language, and that has nothing to do with "know something about HTML, CSS, etc".

For English speaking people like you, it might be a game with words, for me it's a hard work, as I said before. Without a dictionary, these words on the left side are like "a book with seven seals"! And the help function of the DW is not such a big help as some people are thinking.

And here we can close the circle again. All of you DW-consultants try to provide us with professional advice, willing, competent and gladly help so I/we can continue. Thanks!

                          Hans-G.

                          P.S.

... and next I will let validate my homepages.
