1. Re: identifying images with misisng side-car files
jgregson Feb 5, 2010 5:29 AM (in response to bonalymac999)If your objective is to re-create the sidecars, then go to all photos, found in the Grid View under the Catalog sidebar category, select all photos, Ctl-A/Cmd-A, then Save Metadata to File, Ctl-S/Cmd-S.
I recommend doing this just before going to bed.

Seán McCormack Feb 6, 2010 8:01 PM (in response to bonalymac999)Remember that Jpeg, Tiff, PSD and DNG don't have sidecar files too.

bonalymac999 Feb 10, 2010 7:11 AM (in response to jgregson)Hi John
Thanks for the response, sorry I didn'ty have time to look at it before now
In fact I was hoping to do the opposite, so rather than re-creating, I was hoping to delete the link somehow. I have to say that I intensely dislike the xmp file route. There is no doubt that my own workflow has changed and I now move images (very rarely) in Lightroom. I also start there rather than in Photoshop if editing. But I still find xmp's a clumsy solution. But I cannot be bothered with the hassle of using dng's
Anyway, sorry rant over

4. Re: identifying images with misisng side-car files
bonalymac999 Feb 10, 2010 8:13 AM (in response to bonalymac999)Anyway, back to the question.
First stage all I want to do is identify just which images have a missing xmp file. Is there a way to do that?
Thanks

5. Re: identifying images with misisng side-car files
jgregson Feb 10, 2010 9:17 AM (in response to bonalymac999)If your intent is to not use sidecar files, then you can turn off the use of sidecar files and then delete them from your hard drive.
Catalog Setting-->Metadata and uncheck Automatically write changes into XMP.

6. Re: identifying images with misisng side-car files
bonalymac999 Feb 10, 2010 2:09 PM (in response to jgregson)No if I have a link there seems little point in deleting it.
I want to identify only those images that have a broken link to an xmp file
