I have a 3D sphere that has a mask around it. I want the sphere to start deep in Z space and move towards the camera. I need the two to be linked together and the radius of the mask to stay the same as the radius of the sphere through out. Is there an easy way to do this with pick whips or a simple expression?  No Einsteinian equations please . Thanks. Cin

Use the Circle effect for the matte instead of a circular mask, then apply something like this to its radius,

`linear(distance,minDistance,maxDistance,minRadius,maxRadius)`

where the parameters are substituted with suitable values. The distance would then be the Z-position of the sphere for instance. if you make sure that the start position is at the 0 coordinate point, you should not need any additional subtractions, additions or multipliers.
