Just a clarification, the image is from my design document ( FireWorks). Its what I need to accomplish.

Unfortunately you are going to have to subclass.

Your custom Tab class will need to add a dropShadow filter to the textField protected property. You'll probably need to override measure and updateDisplayList to adjust the position of the label.
I was trying to see if there is a way to do it without sub-classing, especially because the TabNavigator is a compounded component that combines a ViewStack & the TabBar ( NavBar) components. So if I a subclass the TabBar as you rightly suggested I'll have to subclass the TabNavigator to use my custom TabBar ...
If I can't use an OTS component/properties/styles, I might as well just subclass a Button and build my own TabNavigator ..
