    decreasing number of paths in a shape whilst retaining visual appearance?

      hello to all

      here i have created an interesting shape by the usage of an art brush applied to the stroke of a polygon. I expanded it's appearance to make it further editable, but unfortunately, it now has a great many paths and loads extremely slowly. The two images show you how illustrator has plotted it [second is outline only].

      here is my question;

      how do i retain the visual complexity of this shape but remove as many superfluous paths underneath it as possible? i'm tired of pretty things that crash my illustrator

      i was considering rasterizing and live tracing it again, but i think i may loose some of the detail.

      what would you suggest?

      thank you kindly
