Have you tried to embed your <mx:SWFLoader> or <mx:Image > component within a <mx:Canvas> with the clipContent property set to true ?

Hi Karl, thanks for the reply.
Wrapping it in the canvas didn't seem to have any effect.
<mx:Canvas width="300" height="200" clipContent="true">
<mx:SWFLoader width="300" height="200" source="anim.swf" />
produced the same thing as without the canvas.
Then try using the Flex component kit for Flash CS3 and instantiate your animation via MXML and use the Flex component properties on it to solve the problem:
Or try creating a mask layer in Flash before exporting the animation SWF.
