    AE Pro CS4 and VOB Files

    l1o1t1r1 Community Member

      I converted home movies that where on vhs tapes to a digital file onto a dvd. They play fine both sound and image from the dvd that they where recorded onto. I would like to bring these home movies into AE Pro CS4 to edit them how is this done?

          VOB isn't a supported import format for After Effects.

          Here's a search that brings up plenty of additional information.

          from "Supported import formats":

          "Some MPEG data formats are stored in container formats with filename extensions that are not recognized by After Effects; examples include .vob and .mod. In some cases, you can import these files into After Effects after changing the filename extension to one of the recognized filename extensions. Because of variations in implementation in these container formats, compatibility is not guaranteed."

            Rename them to MPG and try to open them in AE. Just make sure to have enough space in your media cache folder and be patient - VOB are multiplexed and AE needs a few moments to extract the audio and index the file on first load. If that doesn't work, convert the files to conventional AVIs using tools like TMPEG, MPEGStreamclip and so on...

              Thanks Todd been reading and trying different things from your first link which somehow got me to a freeware software (for pc) called Convert vob to avi 1.7 - I used the mpeg4 setting in the avi format. The program converted with no problems and AE Pro CS4 open it with no problems - being new to AE Pro CS4 I did not know how to get it to play so I opened the converted file in Premiere Pro CS4 and it played fine   So I guess it will play in AE as soon as I learn how to get it to play in there.

              Thanks for your help Mylenium - I tried the renaming but it did not work for me and found the  the Convert vob to avi 1.7 freeware did a good for me.
