    css rule help

    Imcookin

I am new to Dreamweaver CS4. I have created a css and am trying to apply one of the rules to some selected text. When I highlight the text and go to "targeted rule" and scroll to the rule that I want, it doesn't take. It automatically goes back to <new css rule>. Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

Did you make the rule in a separate CSS document?  If so did you attach that CSS document to the HTML document you are working in?

I did make the rule in a separate document. I'm actually working out of a dreamweaver textbook and (hopefully) following every step correctly. But yeah, I did attach that css document to the document I'm working on.

Is your DW Local Site Folder properly defined?

Have you saved your HTML and External CSS files to your local site folder and linked them correctly?

One other thing I left out...

Is your CSS & HTML code passing validation?  Bad code can cause DW to hiccup.

Thank you for helping me with my css rules. As far as I can tell, the style sheet is properly linked to my document. Since I am so new to Dreamweaver (I'm actually experiencing these problems with an assignment I'm working on), I'm VERY unfamiliar with code. This is the first time I've had to deal with it. The validator utilities you referred me to are great - I've bookmarked them! But, I don't know what to do with the answers (again, to the lack of knowledge of DW). It did show 4 errors, but I'm not sure what to do with the answers! When I did the css check, it showed one error: "File not found: import file://localhost/su_styles.css: Operation not permitted" I'm not sure what that means, but when I checked the code, it does show a link to the css. Still not sure what I'm doing wrong!

HTML and CSS code are the 123's and ABC's of web design.  You should spend some time learning basics first, then DW will be much easier for you.

For best results here, we need to see your code. Can you post a URL to your test page?

Thank you again for your help.  I do know that the codes are essential to learning and understanding web design, but unfortunately that class doesn't begin for me for another 3 weeks! I wish there was a requirement to take that class before anything else...but, too late for that now since I've got to turn in my assignment! I've attached the assignment that I'm working on as a zip file. In it are all the files relevant to the site (a couple of the pages may be blank, but that's ok - they're supposed to be for now). I don't really have a url (as far as I know) because this is an assignment where we turn in screenshots of the work we are doing in DW - nothing being posted on the web. The page in particular that I'm having problems with is the "spa.html" page where the "headings" text as well as the "bold_blue" text (both are supposed to be blue) are appearing black. Thanks again!

Thank you again for trying to help. I figured it out - it was a matter of placing a "#" in front of the color in the css panel properties. I have no idea where I went wrong in the first place (but I am becoming more familiar with code). I appreciate your help.
