lock the layers that don't contain your textfield. if you have other objects in the same layer as your textfield, right click after clicking that layer/frame and click distribute to layers so you textfield is in a layer by itself. now lock all other layers and edit your textfield.
thnx for reply.
I did everything u suggested and still not able to get the text to respond as an active layer. Also I noticed that the highlited layer in the layer palette shows an icon with a "checker board" rather than a box with a "T" in it.
I tried to get an image capture of this for you but wasn't able to.
I'm unable to make the text in a given layer active.ie when I drag the "T" icon to the desires position and click the txt does not respond/is not active as it should be,instead of seeing all the text with underlines it remains in active. Not alterable. If I type a letter it doesn't align.
I also noticed that the layer in question in the layers palette is represented by a checkered icon rather than by a "T" on a white backround.../
the way text normally is.
HOW CAN I CHANGE THE CHECKERED LAYER BACK TO A TEXT LAYER AND THUS GAIN ACCESS AGAIN ?
you're not editing the correct layer (with the textfield).
