How reliable are effects when printing?

I'm a former Freehand user now trying to learn AI. As a book designer, most of my AI creations (usually maps or diagrams) are eventually imported into InDesign. A couple of questions:

      1. What's the best file format to import: .ai, .eps, .pdf?

      2. When I've used effects such as Brush strokes in a file, is it "safe" to import that file into ID without expanding the objects using effects, or should they always be expanded? (By "safe," I mean will the graphic reliably rip on a high-end PostScript printer/platesetter.)
