1. Re: Will creating multiple bins and closing them free up memory?
Harm Millaard Feb 24, 2010 9:13 AM (in response to Eric Jurg)In other words, could placing clips in multiple bins (as opposed to folders)
Care to explain the difference?

2. Re: Will creating multiple bins and closing them free up memory?
Eric Jurg Feb 24, 2010 10:01 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)I don't know if there is a difference. That's my question. But if closing bins frees up memory like closing sequences supposedly does, this workflow could help stabilize larger projects. From my experience, closing folders makes no apparent difference in the memory used by a project.

Harm Millaard Feb 24, 2010 10:24 AM (in response to Eric Jurg)What does make a difference is showing only filenames in the timeline and no icons of head or tail.

Ann Bens Feb 24, 2010 10:39 AM (in response to Eric Jurg)I understand what you mean but it does not matter how many bins you have the link to the original is still there.
Best way is to cut the large project up in smaller projects if possible.

5. Re: Will creating multiple bins and closing them free up memory?
Eric Jurg Feb 24, 2010 10:48 AM (in response to Ann Bens)I was hoping that by not pre-loading picons until the bin is opened (picon pre-loading has got to be the "boar" of the memory hog issue), Premiere could free up significant amounts of memory in large projects. But this is probably a pipe dream. Hopefully CS5 will allow the editing of medium to large HD projects. CS4 just doesn't cut it.

Ann Bens Feb 24, 2010 10:53 AM (in response to Eric Jurg)Editing with subclips takes the strain off, but not everybody likes working with subclips. Nor do I.

7. Re: Will creating multiple bins and closing them free up memory?
Bill Hunt Feb 24, 2010 11:20 AM (in response to Eric Jurg)Eric,
A couple of settings that might be useful, if resources are an issue. You can turn off thumbnails in your Project Panel, and only have a list. Next, in the Clips, you can toggle Clip Thumbnail Display to All, First and Last, First only, or None - just names. This will free up more resources.
Good luck,
Hunt

8. Re: Will creating multiple bins and closing them free up memory?
Eric Jurg Feb 24, 2010 12:07 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Thanks, Bill. I do all that and more already. But these make a small difference at best. I'm still getting into stability issues when I get too far beyond 200 clips (HD), which is really a small project. I'm really hoping we see CS5 next month, or at least before the new MBPs come out .
