I am build a new rig. I need some advice on which card to get. I mostly use AE and premiere pro cs4 sometimes 3ds max. Is the Quadro fx 4800 overkill for these programs. I don't want to pay for something that will not be utilized. thanks any feedback is much appreciated.
With CS4, any card made in the past 5 years is more than plenty for After Effects.
However, Adobe has previewed an "upcoming" version ( ) of Premiere that makes extensive use of the GPU. Check it out! Really impressive:
Unsure if AE will have the same hooks (but here's hoping!)
So I'd say buy the cheaper board today. And when CS5 comes out, you know there will be faster/cheaper boards available. Trying to future-proof your graphics card is a hopeless race.
As Navarro said - a lot of that will depend on your decision whether you have plans to upgrade to the next versions or not and it would primarily be driven by Premiere, obviously. Everything else is speculative at this point. If unsure, buy the cheapest compatible card, which would be a normal GeForce GTX 285 and make up your mind later.
