Table creation and encryption/decryption in SQLite

My team has been developing an AIR application which  communicates with a local SQLite database. We have been facing two problems.

      1) Sometimes when we try to create a table in an existing .db file we are unable to do so and need to create a new .db file to house the new table.

We errors like "No such table"

      2) After encrypting the database we cant perform updates to it. Is there any convention to be followed while opening / closing connections to encrypted database? Is there a way to decrypt the database?

We get errors like "Not a database file"

Could you please point us towards a solution.
