Dayglodowner Mar 4, 2010 9:05 PM (in response to marc@marcyankus.com)I cannot agree more with this! The same thing happens to me all the time and I can't believe there isn't an area in the Layer Style pallette to where you can change the name already. Seems like an easy change to make.

I also often get Layer Style when trying to change name

Reynolds (Mark) Mar 15, 2010 12:35 PM (in response to marc@marcyankus.com)Use a shortcut to bring up Layer > Layer Properties. I find this the best way to rename layers

marc@marcyankus.com Mar 15, 2010 1:48 PM (in response to Reynolds (Mark))It does work and is a good suggestion but it feels like a extra two
steps. Maybe o can make it a key command to make it quicker

Reynolds (Mark) Mar 15, 2010 2:19 PM (in response to marc@marcyankus.com)Yes, lets face it - I think that the contact area on the layers name in the panel is far too small. Especially since monitor resolutions are larger now.
If you are slightly below or above the name itself, it brings up layer properties. Shouldn't be this way. I've not used this for renaming layers for years - but looks like another basic interface design problem has cropped up.

carson.jones Mar 15, 2010 3:28 PM (in response to Reynolds (Mark))We've used a shortcut to take care of this for some years now. Couldn't agree more that it's a pain trying to click the layer without launching the layer style panel. We've added a button to one of our custom panels and it does the trick nicely. That said, we're on dual display workstations so we have the room.
A a side note, we've used Configurator to create custom panels... it would be great if we could edit existing ones like the Layers Panel. if we have room for larger panels, as in our situation, perhaps this would be a nice feature to add. It might also be a good idea to allow users to only 'add' to a panel when customizing. Allowing users to reduce or remove content from default panels might be a recipe for disaster. Especially for Adobe Tech support!

When you say that you added a button to a custom panel can you explain how you did that?
Thanks

Hi Marc,
Adobe has released a prerelease of Configurator in the Adobe Labs (link below). It runs as a separate small app that will allow you to create custom Panels for CS4. It's fantastic and very straight forward for those of us that don't know the first thing about scripting (myself included). You're able to add tools, commands, scripts, etc. to a new Panel that you can then use in PS.
We added a command button that launches the layers properties window. With one click this allows us to rename and colour the layer. Handy.

Marijan Tompa Mar 16, 2010 12:26 AM (in response to marc@marcyankus.com)Hey!
Well, you can use Alt+Double Click on layer to open Layer Properties
so you can rename it easely without going in Layer Styles panel.
